Touring - Hip replacement poll

How has having a total hip replacement affected your riding?

seems you're on your own there....:)

I'm curious, though. I guy I work with has had one hip replaced and will have to have the other replaced, too. TW, have you had a hip replaced? If so, how has it affected your cycling?

Tom here. Yeah, I have had both hips done. Left one in 93, and right April 7 this year. After my left (done on Jan 7 1993) that summer I toured around the Olympic peninsula in Wash. state, and then later did the icefields parkway (banff to Jasper). In the years since, I have done many 3-20 day tours, the longest being a fully loaded self supported camping tour from Hope B.C. to banff to Jasper to Kamloops B.C. with a few rest days thrown in along the way. The hip has held up fantastically. I have also taken up randonneuring and have done 5 200's, 2 300's, and one 400 so far. If you are not familiar with randonneuring, check out this site www.randonneurs.bc.ca/ for loads of info. This fall my goal is to be recovered enough to do the season end 200k.
Also, since my 93 operation, I have commuted to work approx. 100 days/year (40k round trip)
I guess the short answer to your question is that having my hip replaced has improved my cycling.

Thanks for the information. My coworker had found that walking was just too painful. He'll be encouraged to hear how well your replacements are holding up. I've been lucky to so far avoid joint damage. All my replacement parts are in my head.
