View Full Version : Roof Rack??

After 2 reasonably happy years with my cheap-but-reliable Dodge Dakota pickup, I am getting a new(ish) car. It's a late 90's Toyota Camry sedan-not exactly the vehicle of my choice, but one which came to me through an inheritance.

Of course, the first question in my mind was "how will I carry my bikes"? I considered a trunk-mounted rack, but they are too inconvenient to use (requiring the trunk to remain closed-what a pain!), and they are less than gentle to sheetmetal, too. So, it looks like I'm going to get a roof rack.

Thule racks seem to be waaay overpriced, but I'm considering this rack. (http://www.performancebike.com/shop/cboProfile.html?SKU=2386) Anybody have any experience with one?

Also, I'm considering
a) seeing what Sear Roebuck has to offer, or
b) seeing what any other on-line dealers have.
My LBS just sells Thules (at an even more ridiculous price...), so I doubt that's an option.

Oh, just to make things more interesting, the car has a sunroof. Will a wind deflector cause problems? Do you usually need a wind deflector?

Last year I bought at Sears one of those hard shell carriers for the top of my van. At that time they were selling Thule racks. Didn't pay much attention to their price, though.

I'd assume with your forehead, you use the sunroof a lot??

Absolutely. Bud I do have a hard time finding hats that fit.
