General Cycling Discussion - Quick Bicycle Tire Changes

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

When I was a kid, I vaguely remember watching a bicycle road race on TV in which the rider was having a problem with one of his wheels. A van pulled up along side him and changed the wheel without the rider having to come to a complete stop. I can't remember if the whole bike was lifted off the street or just one wheel or if this actually even happened. (it may be a figment of my immagination)
I'm trying to find out if anyone out there has ever seen this happen before, what the circumstances are for this to be allowed and if there are any photos of anything like this occuring.
Thanks for your help
And here I thought I was quick doing a tire change in five to ten minutes. Another illusion bites the dust. :(

msprouse,
Our memories from childhood sometimes play tricks on us. You probably saw the rider almost miraculously (to us kids who had to use a wrench to take off a wheel) raise his front wheel off the ground, flip open his quick release, have the technician from his team car or neutral service car slip on another wheel and be on his way. If a car happens to be right there, this can take place literally in seconds. There were many opportunities to see this take place in last April's Paris-Roubaix race where the cobblestones cause flat after flat.
Welcome to BikeForums.

Raymond
