I have an older mt. bike that was given to me and has developed a problem with the left pedal. The pedal feels like it is "flexing", I can feel this only when the pedal is at the top and it is more prevelent when I am putting more force on the other pedal. I have put new pedals on and have exactly the same condition. The cranks are adjusted and tight, nothing has happened recently like an accident to cause this. Any ideas?

Since the problem is confined to one side and existed with two different sets of pedals, it must be the crank or the spindle. Fatigued and/or defective aluminum cranks often break (been there; done that; ouch!), particularly at the pedal eye, but potentially anywhere along the shank or at the spindle eye. Much less commonly, spindles can fail, particularly if scratched to form stress risers or if traumatized in a fall.

Consider a new (or less-used preowned) crankset as a worthwhile investment in your safety and peace of mind, as well as a likely solution to your "flex" problem. While you are at it, strongly consider updating to a modern sealed-bearing cartridge-type bottom bracket.
