I tried out an '06 Kona Jake this past weekend and while comfortable, it seemed much harder to pedal than my current '02 Specialized Hardrock (harder means greater effort for same speed). Is this the case with the bike, or did the shop not lube it or something. I would have mentioned it to the shop man, but didn't want to keep my family waiting.

did you notice the tire pressure? I find that tires that are under inflated will have the largest single impact on a bikes performance (except for maybe rubbing brakes).

just a theory.

Offhand, I would suspect the gear ratios isn't what you are used to or expecting...esp if you are mostly using the middle chainwheel for the majority of your riding.

Kona Jake: Chainwheel: 52/42/30; Freewheel: Shimano CS-HG50 12-25 8 speed

Specialized Hardrock: Chainwheel: 42/32/22; Rear Cogs: Shimano HG-40, 8-speed: 11-32
