Foo - No! Bad dog!!

Ok, so one of my housemates bought a dog, named Gus (picture below), for his girlfriend (Who lives in the house with us) over the summer. They've split up since then (but still live in the house together [awkward :rolleyes:]), and now he's got the dog.

This dog is so freaking stupid, I hate it! It's some kind of sighthound(not sure of exact breed), and makes the absolute WORST house dog ever!! And since we don't really have a yard, it spends almost all day inside the house. It's got a lot of energy, but since it's stuck in the house all the time, it really has no way to constructively release that energy. So, it releases it deconstructively, or something like that.

This dog can chew anything apart. We buy it chew toys that are supposed to be indestructible and he'll destroy them within just a couple of days. And when he doesn't have toys to chew on, he just chews on whatever is in range of his mouth. Speaker wires, TV cables, the couches, the carpet, everything!! Just yesterday, we found where he had chewed through an extension cord that some christmas lights were plugged into. I hope he got a nice shock out of that, and learned his lesson!

When we put this dog out to go to the bathroom, he isn't any better. As soon as he's done doing his business, he starts howling and barking like crazy. Eventually he'll get bored and start chewing on stuff outside. He destroyed the foam seat on a snowmobile, brake light cables on a trailor, ripped apart a tarp, etc.

He's really not a bad dog, it's just that he's got so much energy but can't do anything with it. Everyone in the house is gone or busy during the day, so there's no one to look after him. He gets put in this tiny little cage four hours on end. I feel sorry for him, but none of us really have the time to properly look after him. I've talked to the guy who owns the dog, but he seems like he really wants to keep it. If it were my dog, I'd have to give it away to a home that could take better care of it.

Every morning at around 7 or 8 o'clock, the dog starts howling and barking. It's cage is right at the bottom of the stairs, my room is right at the top of the stairs, so I can hear him pretty well. :mad: I'm mad at him, but at the same time, I feel sorry for him too. He's stuck in this tiny little cage for so long!

he looks like a puppy to me. no wonder he has so much engery. plus he is bored out of his mind from being locked up for so long. a dog like this really needs to have an owner that can dedicate time to him. otherwise it's unfair for everyone.

Tell your friend that he's an inconsiderate dick. The dog is miserable and under-stimulated and the roommates are getting annoyed, especially when their **** gets chewed up. If he actually cared at all about the dog's well-being instead of his own desire to have a pet for the sake of having a pet, he'd find someone who has the time to raise the dog in the right environment.

That's so very sad. That dog needs some exercise. I wish people would not get dogs if they are so ignorant about the care they need.

Find a good home for the dog - make your roomate do it - or find another place for your roomate. After the dog grows up you will REALLY have a problem.

that's a great idea. my friend in portland, OR does this with her dog when she goes to work. they have a web cam that you can log into during the day and watch them play too. keeps the dog social and healthy. plus, they make sure he has water and all that too.

Doggie daycare sounds like a great idea. We have a English Cocker Spaniel and he will wear you out playing fetch, run over the entire farms with me and pretty much has the energy of 5 dogs. Keep him busy, keep him playing and he can sit still, he can behave - but I don't even want to think of what he would be like if he wasn't near one or the other of us at times. Cocker Spaniels were really popular for a while, until they destroyed people's homes!

The dog needs attention, some discipline (like obedience classes for dog and owner) and some exercise. If not corrected now the dog will grow into a real problem. Blame your roomate, no the dog. Seriously!

I think you're right, he just wants to have a pet without having any of the responsibilities that come with it. He's either at work, or asleep during the day, so we're left to clean up after the dog destroys the trash can, or craps on the carpet.

I don't think there are any places like that around here. And I doubt the owner would want to do that anyway.

As long as somebody is in the house to keep an eye on the dog, he doesn't need to be in his cage. But he still spends quite a bit of time in there.

The dog is a little spoiled. And the dog gets a lot of mixed messages. for example: the rest of us in the house don't want the dog to be on the couches, but the owner let's the dog sleep next to him when he's on the couch.

I have a friend whose dog ate his gas barbeque! He managed to pull off the knobs, handle to the lid, and gas hose and chew them up. He found the tank out in the yard. It sounds like your pup is bored and doesn’t get attention and training it needs. Hope you can talk your roommate into giving the dog to a good home.

Obviously this guy does not have the time to spend with this dog. for the good of the dog, he has to start walking him and working with his re: obediance, or find him a decent home with people who can!

well, that could work too-- meet girls and get the dog exercise at the same time!

The problem isn't the dog, it's the owners. Unfortunately in this case with the two of them being broken up, the dog can sense the tension in the household and it's confusing him. He's taking out is frustration and anxiety out by destroying things. Kinda like kids of divorced parents, it can cause a lot of emotional trauma seeing the parents go through this. And I'm sure there's some manipulation, overt or subconscious, of using the dog to get back at the other. Best thing for the dog is for one of them to move out.

kick that dog's ass. We keep a pitbull inside and she has no problems. She knows what she can chew up and what she can't. She also knows she'll get her ass kicked if she chews on my speaker wires.

If you cropped that dogs ears it would be a twin to the doberman I had. I think that's a doberman. They do have a lot of energy. I hope someone convinces the owner to get the dog to day care.

Dude, coonhounds are NOT housepets. No true working dogs should be cooped up. It's just wrong.

I was out eating dinner with a friend, the other guys were outside working on the sleds, so the dog was all alone in the house. The woman of the house (the same one as in my other thread) had made a dozen poppy seed muffins that were sitting on top of the stove cooling. One of the guys looked in the window from outside and saw him standing up with his paws on the stove. They came in to see what he was doing, and he had eaten all 12 muffins, paper wrapper and all, in about 30 seconds! :eek: We aren't really even mad at the dog, mostly just amazed that a 35 pound dog could do something like that! This dog needs to challenge Kobayashi to a hot dog eating competition! :roflmao:

Dogs are ALWAYS hungry. They're programmed that way, as opportunistic feeders.

That looks like a Coon hound. I had one of those dogs for about a year, and my family and neighbors couldnt take it anymore. Had to give him away to somebody else. Could never seem to get him house trained, and he had this horrible howl/bark, and he never stopped barking. We have a yard, and it didnt help. It looked like my Coon hound had a lot of inbreeding in his family, from his papers.

We have had several dogs over the years, but this one we couldnt take it. One of my friends had a Coon hound for a while, and had to give him away too. Her dog would never quit barking and tearing things up also.

If that is a Coon hound you have, they really want to be in the country hunting. Great dog for that, but not a good house dog.

sure he's not part Beagle? our beagles will do stuff like that ... anything they can reach, they will eat. one of 'em learned how to climb on the kitchen stolls to get up on the counter. and then he got in the garbage which we put on the counter to keep them from getting at it under the sink.

Nothing wrong with the dog...he has a bad owner.

Yes, my first thought was this dog looks like a hound or part-hound. His behaviors when bored confirm this. Hounds need to have a lot of training, attention, physical activity, and companionship. Breeds like these are meant for people who are outdoors a lot, the dog is the companion and helper. I don't see how a household of busy college students could provide that. It's sad and so unfair to the dog. I wish your housemate would find him a home before he becomes too set in his ways to be wanted. You're in the U.P., aren't you? It seems to me it would be easy to find someone who hunts and would be delighted to have him.
