He's Baaaack!

I did it! I did it! I did it!

Just had to come in and share this. I know it is not a major feat for many of you, but I could not handle 40 miles above 14 mph in December.

I had a wonderful (though draining) weekend. I finished the entire 180 miles of the Houston - Austin MS 150!

Saturday was my first ever "English Century" / 100 miles. I averaged 17.9 miles per hour/.

My wife was a real sport playing the support role of meeting me at the mid point and finish lines. I really wanted her there for my big day.

Sunday was the slightly shorter route of 80 miles. There are two routes that can be taken - Eiter the "park" which has the most challenging ride because of the tougher hills, or the "bypass" which is rolling hills. Well, my primary riding buddy and I decided to take the full challenge head on. We took the park. Decided if need be we would walk some of the hills. (Lots of cyclists have to) Well I never had to get off and walk! I made it up every hill even though I had to drop into granny gear Averaged 16.3mph on day two which was good for us considering the hills.

I did have a out of control rider crash into me on Saturday. Banged up my rear wheel / derailer. No major damage. I performed some roadside patches and rode it in to the maintenance. They fixed it up in about 20 minutes and we were on our way. I stayed up and so did he which was great considering we banged wheels so bad - locked his front to my rear. We just clipped out in time.

Day two, around the 60th mile, I got a hot spot and now have a saddle sore- Ouch - my first. Any best treatment?

Just had to come in and brag - Thanks for listening.

Tomorrow =- lazy day other than picking up the dogs and going to dentist. Also want to have my bike shop check over my bikes rear end.

Matt.....Good night - I am out of here.

Bravo Matt! Take it easy for a couple of days - a nice easy spin will help the legs recover.

WOW!! I am impressed.

Good job.

Congrats! Sounds like a good ride.

As for the saddle sore, if it's already there, grin and bare it while you recover for a day or so. Start by using a chamois cream when you ride and get out of your shorts ASAP post ride. You want to keep the area dry when you're off the bike. I use Gold Bond medicated for that, and it works well. I use it as a preventative, too. If it won't go away, time off of the saddle is the order of the day (or two or three).

Nice riding Matt. 100 miles is a target I have yet to tackle, but hope to work up to it. I've done 75 mile rides and felt that I could carry on so maybe this year....

Way to go

Way to go!!!

I survived the trip as well and it was awesome! I did the park route as well and the hills in there are just SICK! I'm ashamed to admit that I bailed and walked in a couple of spots, but at least I didn't chicken out and take the bypass. One guy was going up a steep climb and lost all momentum and just flopped over while clipped in. The thing I was most amazed at was that I was able to do pretty well on the second day -- Saturday night things were aching after the century and I was sure hoping I'd be up to it on Sunday morning. Woke up feeling pretty good and when the first miles went down easy on Sunday I knew I was going to make it!

When I get home I'll upload some pics from the trip.

Grendel-

Congrats on a job well done! I was very suprised that I made it up the hills. I went to Huntsville to ride two times before the MS and felt like death warmed over after 60 miles of hills not as radical as the park. I guess that that suffering paid off.

I know what you mean about the aches and pains. I fell asleep in the bed at the hotel with an ice pack on both knees. The massage at our team tent was 400% worth it. I got about 40 minutes of full body. All I remember is - whoa I did not realize I had a knot there, ah,, that feels good, and noticing I was drooling on the table.

I was a bit lacking in the motivation department on Sunday morning when I saw the massive start line. Yikes! Our team had an individual start on Saturday so I did not realize how big it was. We are thinking of doing bike to the beach in October.

Did you camp or get a hotel?

Congratulations again! You did great.
