The wife and I bought a Bowflex Extreme2 about a month ago and I've been using it 4x a week since and have gotten pretty good results thus far. Between cycling, a better diet, and the Bowflex, I've dropped 12 lbs in the last 4 weeks. We chose the Extreme2 vs the other machines because its designs requires you to do a lot fewer cable changes to do a complete workout. The only downside is cost but the upsides (convenience, variety of exercises, etc) definitely outweigh them. Look around on craigslist for a used machine since a lot of people buy one, use it for a month, it sits for a year, then they sell it off at half the price. That's the route we went and got an almost new machine for $800.

Honestly.. just get a gym membership. Its way more practical. More equipment variety, and you are more likely to get a good workout because when you are there, you HAVE to workout. At home, most people just turn these things into a clothes rack.
Anyway... f you decide a home gym is what you want, I reccommend going with dumbells and a bench. More versatility, less space, and much cheaper.

Everyone that i have talked to said they loved the bowflex, if i could justify the cost i would get one in a second. Just buy an olympic weight set med ball ect for less than 200$ you can have everything you need
I had one and used it a lot. I ended up joining a gym tho and got hooked on going to the gym so I sold the Bowflex. Great machine tho.. if you're going to actually use it, I'd say go for it.
Bowflex is nice but has a $500 or so premium to pay for all those tv ads. Look in the paper, locally you can see a bowflex for sale a couple of times per month. Craigs list is also a possibility depending on your metro area size. Gyms are really nice, but you have to see how available the machines are, some places are swamped in the evenings, others have lots of space. For me the biggest problem is erratic work schedules and working out of town so gym membership would not be too useful. Those with a regular schedule and nearby, relatively underused gym, and with a $50-100/mo to spare could find a gym very useful. Weight alternations with spinning sessions can really tone you up over a winter.
