Who is more dangerous behind the wheel?

Sixteen to twenty-one year olds. Proven to have more accidents due to inattentiveness and inexperience. This is because the parts of our brains that make good, quick decisions aren't fully developed until the mid-twenties.

I find it is idiots that are the worst drivers. There was no option on the poll for that.

Well, this chart would show that it's males:

the thread is not about who has the highest rate of fatality...and although I do believe that your probably right all that the chart proves is that when men do "mess up" we "mess up" spectacularly ;) what if the question were rephrased to : who can parallel park better?

I can't really say whether women or men are worse drivers. I've been buzzed and /or nearly killed by members of both sexes but cannot judge which is worse. The male drivers I had problems with weren't staring at attractive women nearby but were those who thought they completely owned the road all the time. In one instance, a male tour bus driver nearly shoved me off a narrow mountain road and over a 200 foot cliff.
Meanwhile, the female drivers were not the stereotyped people who did their fingernails, applied makeup, and other such activities while behind the wheel. The females I speak of were contending with child care issues or were giving people the 400 watts as they maneuvered 10-ton dump trucks at breakneck speeds!
Therefore, I cannot determine whether male drivers or female drivers are worse for this poll.

Hmmm, I once commented to my dear wife who dislikes my driving that if men are worst drivers, why do we always end up driving?
Her comeback was so good I nearly drove off the rode - "We are trying to give you practice..."

Apparently you've never driven in one of the glorious 5 boroughs that make up NYC.
I was going to say: males. They cut me off, and drive crazy. Meanies :(

Read more at this page: http://www.iihs.org/research/fatality_facts/gender.htmlInteresting numbers. I wonder what the accident rate/100,000 miles looks like, by gender? My suspicion is that while more males are killed, due to the risk factors cited, females may be involved in a higher proportion of (non-fatal) accidents.
Hmm... I find that women are the most oblivious to the fact that they almost hit me or that I'm even there, but men are the biggest jerks in the sense that they don't have the patience to wait and pass safely.
I've often wondered if the statistics about male v. female drivers are skewed since men seem to drive more frequently.

I have driven in all of them and am thus well qualified to state that learning to drive should be a requirement for getting a license in NJ. ;) :p

Interesting numbers. ...
Also note that it records deaths by vehicle occupants - which would not necessarily be the same gender as the operator of the vehicle. All this shows is that men are more likely to die in a vehicle than women.

I was trying and trying to come up with how to say what I thought. And then, there it was. Thanks.
I'd say the number of bad drivers I've seen was split pretty evenly between men/women. Some people are just bad drivers, I don't think gender really plays a big part in it.
One of my best friends (a male) scares me nearly to death every time I have to be in his car whiles he's driving. Crap, he thinks he owns the road and every other person on it should yield to him. Seems like everytime he drives, he nearly gets into an accident. Then he just flips off the other driver and swears at him. I try to avoid riding with him whenever possible.

Not to mention the whole "I'm invincible" attitude.
Personally I'd be happy to see the minimum driving age increased to 25. Let them go through their invincibility phase in a place somewhere else where they won't hurt anybody else.
I would say men, since we tend to drive like idiots with something to prove.

The feeling of "something to prove" also dissipates as one grows older and actually does things with their life. Perhaps I should have added that to my above post.
Statistically, those drivers involved in accidents are most likely to kill people. ;)

windows drivers are worse
If we're talking strictly "bad" drivers with regard to cyclists, my experience shows it's women hands-down. It's not they drive fast or recklessly, but seem to panic when they come up behind a cyclist and don't know what to do (as well as some men). I've only been cycling seriously for about a year and I've had probably a dozen "near-misses" and I'd say all but one or two were women. Most often when I get passed and then they make an immediate right turn (with no signal) and I almost plow into their door.

I guess it depends upon how you define "worse". Going from insurance-industry numbers, it appears that women get into more accidents, but these are minor fender-benders. While men get into fewer wrecks, those tend to be catastrophic and costs a lot more in damage. So as a group, men cause more damage. There are examples of good & bad for both.
But in terms of "cyclist" worse, those have to be hick guys in pick-up trucks. Just about every single incident where I was buzzed too close, shoved off the road, right-of-way cut-off, etc., it was by a redneck in a pick-up truck.
However, I must have to say that the absolute worse drivers I've seen, regardless of definition, are Asian women. Both my mum and cousin failed their driver's test multiple times and I've never ever felt safe driving with them. That's because back home, women don't need to drive. If you could afford a car, you can also afford a driver. The women get driven everywhere they want to go; learning to drive is never a concern. It's coming around full-circle, anyone tried out that new Lexus that parks itself?
My casual observations. Young men drive recklessly. I know I did. They are generally accompanied by a lot of noise, so they are easy to keep an eye on. On the other hand, more mature women tend to be the ones that are driving faster, particularly in SUVs. I had a lady come up behind me in a Land Rover today on I-66. I was doing about 75 in the 55, just pacing the traffic in the left lane. I moved over and let her go. She crawled up the ass of the car that had been a ways in front of me. Then she thought she saw a gap 2 lanes over in the right lane, and moved all the way across to try to take advantage. I watched her dodge around 3 lanes for a while, while I slowly closed the gap between myself and the car in front, then just paced it. About 6 miles later here she comes roaring up my ass again. I didn't move over for her again. Anyway, totally casual observation, but I see more women over say 25 driving more recklessly then men of the same age. Younger than that, I think it's males, hands down.

Sort of like how women are more likely to attempt suicide, but men are more likely to actually kill themselves when they attempt suicide.
I notice a similar kind of pattern when I'm out riding. Women are more likely to do something stupid that puts you in danger, but men are more likely to pass too close.
Driving at a high rate of speed and weaving in and out of traffic on the freeway is a sign of a great driver. If not, he'd be in an accident everytime. If you can zoom 30, 40, 50+ mph above the speed limit on the freeways while darting between lanes of traffic, you are a damn good driver.
And if you can split lanes on your motorcycle between SUVs and 4x4's going 30+ mph above the flow of traffic, you rock as a motorcyclist.
Would you call all of the NASCAR guys bad drivers because they haul ass and weave in and out between each other to pass?
A bad driver is someone who can't operate and/or doesn't have full control over his or her vehicle.

You may not wreck yourself, but you can freak other people out or force them to make a move that causes an accident. IF you can do this without forcing other people to react, like they don't have to put their brakes on or move aside for you, like you were invisible, then sure go ahead.
Driving at a high rate of speed and weaving in... <snip>...A bad driver is someone who can't operate and/or doesn't have full control over his or her vehicle.
Only on a race track. Driving that way on the highway where conditions are not controlled is a sign of idiocy.

I've heard that the Adams Golf Redline RPM 460 Comp is a pretty poor driver.
My PCI Express NVIDIA GeForce 6600 GT crashes all the time -- its got to be one of the worst drivers ever.
