Classic & Vintage - Truly stupid ideas of mine

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

First, did any of you realize that this forum has more stickies than any other forum? Currently we have nine stickies going.
I think we need two more:
#10) Lugs
#11) Dork disks/disc/pie plates/spoke protectors
Lugs because we all love them.
The other things, well, because I would like to see a timeline for dork disk evolution, and just to see how outrageous they got.
Anybody else think these are stupid ideas, or should we press lotek/Joe for some more stickies?
Will we run out of room for more important stuff if we have too many stickies?

We could have a sticky to keep track of the other stickies...
I do like the thought of a thread about the evolution, timeframes and designs for the spoke protectors and lugs both... Of course then there would probably be interest in cranks, hubs, brakes... we really could have a full page of stickies that could all prove interesting.
Maybe someone should put up a Cranky & Vintage wiki site...
I think a few of the stickies have just about out lived their usefulness. But I'll leave it up to lotek to manage them. We had a thread about lugs, different levels of workmanship, styles, etc a few days ago. But I think the server may have eaten it along with the other missing threads during the crash. If I had a good place to photograph the different lug work on my 3 lugged frames I'd post some more better photos of mine.
There is always the wooljersey galleries for endless lug lust enjoyment.

Dork discs? They're as old as deraillers, started as small metal discs the size of the cogs and grew with plastic attached as the cages got longer and the freewheels bigger. Not a bad solution for the person that has no interest in maintaining their bike, but the first thing to go as someone gained knowledge. Certainly better than running your derailler into the spokes, ripping it and the dropout hanger off.
Now, talk about dork, sheepskin seatpads...

Having grown up to comments on a regular basis on the topic, I do tend to avoid the word evolution... and of course the first time I use it in the forum, there it is. :D
If I only had a dollar for each time I heard "How's the theory?" in high school... From people thinking they were being unique and creative.
Then there is the constant confusion anywhere that has a file, with the last name of Gregory... I have had mistakes happen so often, that almost as soon as someone starts looking like they can't find my file under my last name, I say "it is probaby under Darwin." And there it is, more often than not.
But, I think I am wandering off topic now. ;)

I am glad to see that no one so far thinks that my ideas are that stupid! Perhaps a sub-forum that's nothing but stickies for Classic and Vintage? Something like the Road Bike Racing sub-forum in Road Cycling.
It could be an ever-growing database; stickies for steels, paint, lugs. Perhaps Little Darwin is correct, a sticky for things like cranks and brakes also might be useful, just to help people identify those odd finds, or at least narrow down the age? I know we have the Campagnolo Visual Database thread going, that could prove to be a useful sticky also.
Yeah, I think a sub-forum of nothing but stickies for the C & V crew would be good...
But no stickies on evolution. That would bring the P & R crowd over.
East Hill
hmmm, I'll have to give the sub forum for stickies some thought.
I was contemplating letting some of the stickies drift down to oblivion.
I also was thinking of adding at least one more.
Unfortunately I think we could start a sticky for almost every aspect
of C&V (i.e. rear derailleurs, brakes, cranksets etc.)
let me discuss with rest of mods and I'll get back to ya.

Yes, but don't we deserve it? Aren't we well behaved and truly dedicated? We thirst for knowledge here, no just foolin' around stuff going on here.

I don't think you would want to put them up with a reserve.
Seriously, if we all put up photos of identified pie plates/spoke protectors, the next time someone asks "What is this bike?", that person would get referred to the pie plate sticky to see if there's a match. I realize that these things were mass produced and probably utilised by more than one maker, but it would narrow down the choices.
We could get crossover traffic from the 50+ lot, as well.

I must confess that one of the reasons I posted this in the first place is because I have wondered exactly how big the pie plates got before the manufacturers came to their senses. Or was it simply because they couldn't afford the price for the chrome anymore? I thought it was just the US/Japanese manufacturers who did this, but a quick look at the offerings on ebay reveals Raleigh and Bianchi have them as well. I would imagine that other manufacturers 'offered' them too.
East Hill
Take them disc golfing.
That way, it doesn't hurt so bad when you lose it in a swampy area.
And seriously, you still HAVE them? They're always the first thing to go--right into the garbage.
Anyone use an alternative to protect the spokes and derailer from accidental over-shifting? (Aside from properly setting the derailer?)

a sticky sub forum would be a useful place for people to post pics which could then be used to start a website type database.

Of course you have; those four at the bottom are the ones sighted over Washington D.C. in 1952, and the one at the top is the Promenade Deck from Deep Space Nine.
