Hi,

I posted a pic of this frame a while back and i think it was lost in the server crash. it was ID'd as a 1992. Anyways, i wanted to it build up, and i remember that a few members had similar frames built up, could you guys please repost those pics. i wanted to know what you guys used to build it up. i am not too concerned about using period correct parts (unless you guys can send them my way ;)) .The rear spacing is 130mm and i think the front is 100mm, so what kind of rear cluster/rims can i use, lightweight if possible. i dont want to coldset the rear. so, how many gears in the back? Also, what cranks and BB and headset would work well. I'm thinking of using shimano 105 stuff if i can find it, and because it is not too expensive. and finally can i use more modern brake/shift levers, or can i use index D/T shifters (if still available). If, not than reliable friction shifters are ok.

Hi,

I think I replied in that topic. I promissed to scan the original catalogue pic & specs. Don't have the catalogue here now, but expect it will be up in 2 or 3 weeks.

Though the frame is probably built in '92, it is of the 1993 modelyear.

The 130mm rear spacing is the current modern standard for road bikes, and all 8/9/10-speed road rear freehubs. In 1992 or 1993 this bike would have come with 8-speed cassette. 100mm spacing is standard for nearly all front hubs, road or mountain, for at least the last 40 years, probably longer.
You can use whatever 700c rims you want.

Basically this is a standard modern road bike frame, for all intents and purposes. You can use downtube shift levers (assuming that it has down-tube braze-ons like the one pictured below in my post. I'm assuming that it does have standard down-tube shifter braze-ons; that was typical of bikes (steel or otherwise) in the early 1990's. Or you can use brake-shift levers and just use the cable stops that bolt on top of downtube braze-ons.

Pictured are the two Koga frames I purchased off ebay in Feb. of 04. The black and teal is a Exerciser and the purple and white is a Runner. The Exerciser hasn't been built yet but has a new black 105 9 speed group set aside for it. The Runner was built with a 9 speed Tiagra drivetrain and Shimano barend shifters from spare parts I had on hand. I measured the inside rear spacing at a hair over 128mm and the 9speed wheels slipped right in without much trouble. I did have to file and sand off excess clearcoat that had run to the inside of the dropouts, which while barely visible, kept the wheel from sliding into the dropout correctly.

I would go with a 8speed Shimano 600 / Ultegra group (or 8sp DuraAce), with a set of Ultegra/Open Pro wheels. Would be a great build that will serve you very well without investing a ton of money.

I'm one of the guys who also had a Prologue frame. The BB hanger is standard English threading, so no worried getting something that will fit there. The previous posters are correct - 130 mm rear end means anything 8-speed on up will work.

I had the following on mine:

Shimano Ultegra/600 cranks, hubs (8-speed, 36 hole), RD and FD (circa 1992), Dia-Compe side pull brakes and Dia-Compe aero brake levers, Shimano barcons, generic seat post, Selle San Marco Rolls saddle (love those things), Mavic rims (MA-2 or MA-3), and old Ritchey stem, some sort of Nitto bars, and Specialized Armadillos (700cx26 or 28), Shimmano first-generation SPD road pedals (the purple-and-white ones, all scuffed to hell). Oh, and exactly the headset that's in your picture.

I used this stuff because it was what I had to take off a dead Bridgestone RB-1. I agree with your target component strategy - in terms of value and ride, the frame is worth good, but not top-drawer, equipment.

Hey guys,

as always, thanks for all the info. well, now im looking to throw on a BB and HS (threaded fork, 1 in. i think). i wanted to ask, what type of HS (threaded) and BB will work? Specifically, are the threads ISO or JIS ?? -that is my main concern. and what HS, BB would you guys recommend? i am looking to keep it japanese. so, is there a quality tange( does tange still make HS+BB s?) that will work? i can always go shimano.

I thought I heard that Tange was extinct - I could be wrong on that.

As for threading, standard old-fashioned English threading is what that puppy takes, at least for the BB. (I never took out the headset that came with, but I'm all but certain that Japanese frames in general, and Miyate in particuler, used the English thread patterns as standard.) That means that you have a lot of possible options, anything from 35 year old loose bearing cup-and-cones to Phil Wood to other cartridge sets. Any LBS or mail-order place should be able to set you up.

As to what taper size matches up with what crank arms, I have zero clue. Also, as to how long the BB spindle should be, I can't help you - sorry. But for the threads, think English.

And yes, it has a 1" threaded fork.

Tange's not extinct. They make all of the cartridge bottom brackets that say Shimano on them, among other things. They still make headsets too, but I'd go with an Ultegra with cartridge bearings if it has to be Japanese.
