I'm looking at the Cateye cordless computers, and can get either the Cateye Cordless II (which I've read good things about) or the newer Cordless 7 (which I haven't read much about) for $39. Should I go with the one that's proven or a newer, presumably improved model?

I can't comment for the newer model but I do have four Cateye2 speedo's and not one has ever given me any trouble from mountain biking in the rain and mud to riding in summer to frosty winter mornings. A simple but very reliable speedo. I have used them since 1995.

I have the Cateye II and love it, so of course I haven't tried or seen the new 7 yet other than just in a catalog. I would say that if you can get the Cateye II at a closeout reduction-do it!
