Commuting - Christmas List

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
All I want for Christmas is...
A new Baclava
Goofy looking rain pants
http://www.rainlegs.co.uk/
A new helmet--Bell Metro.
I got to say that of all the gifts I've gotten over the years, the most fun ones are for cycling.

I mean a balaclava but I'll take some baklava, too! That's why I never could pronounce this word--too much similarity with the dessert.:o

The goofy-looking rainpaints actually would work very well; that's exactly the spot on my legs that get the most wet!
The only "fun" cycling gift I ever got was Tireflys (http://www.tireflys.com/tireflys_rwb_auto.html), but was disappointed that they didn't really work very well. They didn't stay on when moving, only when bumped. Replacing batteries didn't seem to help.
I was thinking last night that it would be fun to have an automatic shed door opener with the remote on my bars so I could open the door for myself as I approached! I guess if we had a real garage this would actually be a possibility! :)
The Ditty Bops Bicycle Bikini calendar (http://www.thedittybops.com/calendar.htm) was a great gift idea last year, but unfortunately, it appears they've changed focus to vegetables (http://www.thedittybops.com/calendar07.htm)(!) for 2007. :(
You know you're a cyclist when you get a Bike Bikini calendar and spend more time looking at the bikes than the bikinis! (Or maybe you're just getting old! )

Oh, the cyclist is a person in your neighborhood,
in your neighborhood, he's in your neighborhood.
Yes, the cyclist is a person in your neighborhood.
He's a person that you'll meet, as you're driving down the street.
He's a person that you'll meet each day.
Damn you! Now I have that tune stuck in my head!

Now we should all make suggestions to enhance the OP's Christmas list.
1) CSC Team Jersey
2) Assos bib shorts
3) Rack trunk
4) New wheelset
5) Itunes gift card.
6) Neck gaiter
That's all I can remember from my list. Being that my wife's budget for me is $200 I think that #2 and #4 are out.
I only asked for a couple non cycling items this year; a fleece jacket and going to Disneyland with the family for a day.
If my girlfriend loves me, she'll either get me that 300mm f2.8 telephoto or a set of zipp 303's.

I already finished and spent the last week riding my Christmas present/winter project road bike, then today I picked up a Burley Rockpoint jacket that I'd been wanting to try...so my Christmas list is kaput and it isn't even December - so I guess I need to add to the list:
New SS winter bike. Thinking a One-Way, or maybe something with flat bars.
Of course if I get another bike, I'll need a new Brooks and pedals.
New light - I really want to try one of them Planet Bike Alias HIDs
New parts for the Bianchi xcross - cassette, compact crank.
New parts for the Fuji World touring bike - bar end shifters, brake levers.
Or, since I just got a new flat screen TV, a new bed and spent $1300 fixing what needed fixed on my truck, maybe I'll just relax and say that Santa already came for me and save my money to get the bike stuff I want after Christmas. ;)
I just emailed part of my list off to "santa." Seems like I didn't really need anything. So I just selected some items that would be nice to have.
Zinn repair books, more T & C tires, mountain bike shoes, avid brakes, ultra sensor shorts.
I asked for a book, a new bike, and a repair stand.
I'm crossing my fingers :D

Unfortunately I've already spent up the next 2 Christmasses, but I am hoping to get a truing stand. I'm getting Zinn's road book out of the library.

Need to finish the commuter so I asked for a gift certificate, but this is more fun:
Tires - 26 x 1.25 Kevlar lined of some sort
Messenger bag (admit it, they look cool :) )
Frame pump
Spare tubes and saddle bag
Platform/Clipless pedals with Powergrips
Cash to finish my DIY headlight (I already have the bulb and tomato paste can)
Or, I'll just take some baklava which is nonexistent in the midwest :(
My bike related Xmas list:
Illuminite jacket
Voler toe covers
OXO Good Grips® LiquiSeal™ Stainless Steel Travel Mug
Shimano 540 spd pedals for the commuting machine
interesting jerseys (maybe a retro or an obscure shop jersey)
D/A 9spd bar end shifters for the tri bike project
I'm going to add a couple more (a guy can wish, can't he?):
Campy 15mm Peanut Butter wrench
Polar S625x heart rate monitor
Ksyrium SL wheelset
Cassave
11-30-06, 02:22 PM
A pair of SIDI Genius 5's
A set of Ortlieb Classic roll-tops in yellow... and that very cool front rack on that very cool Rivendell posted earlier. The Rivendell next Christmas... ;)

There's a guy at work that commutes with one of these...he loves it. Bike is in nice shape considering his mileage. Go for it!
A Rivendell Bleriot - the frame, w/S&S couplers, some wheels, various parts. I've got other parts at home.
My bike related Xmas list:
Illuminite jacket
I'm of the opinion that Illuminite is highly over-rated. It's not reflective enough to provide any significant safety benefits when compared to truly reflective outer wear (e.g., leg/arm bands, reflective vest, etc.).

Really? I have a pair of Illuminite gloves that I tested by shining my car headlights at from a couple of hundred feet away. I thought they showed up pretty well.

Stick a piece of good reflective tape on those gloves and do the same test - you'll see how much more visible the reflective tape is. I have the Switchback jacket...gave it to the kid. Darn thing was like a sauna, even in the winter. I do have an illuminite helmet cover though, which I kinda like.

Well, I had an Illuminite jacket a few years back and was disappointed with its performance. My girlfriend at the time drove behind me and found that it was "better than a standard jacket, but not by much".
If Illumunite was very effective, you'd expect to see it incorporated into safety gear...but, it's not. Instead, safety gear (e.g., for road workers) uses high-reflectivity panels. These provide much more reflectivity than Illuminite can hope to match.
FWIW, I plan on adding a construction worker vest (DOT II or III standard) to my commuting kit in the near future. I already have several good cycling jackets, and simply throwing the vest on over them will, IMO, be much cheaper and more reflective than an Illuminite jacket.

That's a good point. I may have to call the North Pole and revise my order.

It's not that I haven't commuted on a road bike before but I have my folder for commuting. A Cervelo would be a less shall we say utilitarian ride. :D

A carbide bike headlight with carbide.
A 250 watt PAR56 bulb with holder and a Lithium Ion battery with charger to power it.
One of those new LED streetlights fixed up as a tail light.
A full set of Showers Pass rain gear with gloves and booties to match.

'06 Masi Vincere.
There's a perfectly sized one for $1000 at my LBS. I'm trying to get the brown and not-brown sides of my family to coordinate efforts and get that bike. It's so hot. Reeeeeowr!

Nancy and I always buy each other the same old boring Christmas presents and open them early on Thanksgiving day; season passes to Snowbird, Alta, Solitude or Snowbasin. :) This year it's Snowbasin.
My birthday is this month too and I've also already opened that present...

Cheers,
Came with the fenders, I swapped the saddle and pedals from a bike I am giving to my little bro for Christmas. He doesn't have SPD shoes nor do I imagine that he'd appreciate a B17 on a road bike. ;)

I already purchased by Christmas present. Just waiting for it to shop. As Bill O'Reilly would say, "The most ridiculous item of the day". I bicycle mountable, no ear-bud required, MP3 boombox.

Impeachment?
Seriously, Nothing's on my list except some of mom's homemade jelly, and the chance to see my family in 2007. I have enough of everything.
My wants are not so greedy as to be on a christmas 'want' list. I think that's so self-centered and crass. A christmas list should be full of stuff you're buying OTHER people.
Remember O'Henry's "Gift of the Magi?" tragic....
