Looks like jyossarian and I will be doing a night ride Manhattan loop next Thursday (December 7th) - PM me if you'd like to go! Will be sometime after work and car moving issues (7-8-9? we're not too sure yet). Usually it takes me about 2:20 of actual riding and 3 hours total with traffic stops and whatnot - about 30 miles in total. Not out to set speed records but explore some really scenic areas at night. Lights would be a really good idea - some areas are hard for me to see even with light.
Also, don't forget the Times-Up (http://bikeforums.net/showthread.php?t=242301) ride this Friday!
I kept the title vague so whenever anyone is planning on going at night post here.
Bump - tomorrow's the 7th! Anyone else besides jyossarian and I? We'll be kicking off on the East Side greenway at 78th at 6:15.
I'd like to take advantage of this weather! Anyone want to go for a ride tomorrow (Tuesday) night, say around 7ish? Perhaps a Manhattan loop (~30 miles) or ride out to Coney Island (~20 miles) for some beer and hot dogs?
Thursday works better for me. Might rain tomorrow too.
Can't do Thursdays for a while :( Actually lately Tuesday nights are the only time I have unless it's after 11 PM or so (which would be fine for me but I have a feeling not for many others :) ). And the rain is barely anything from what I'm reading.
Wanna do 7:30pm from prospect tomorrow? My gf wants to come along but shes getting out late.
I could go to Prospect Park. Where should I meet you?
Might rain tomorrow too.
Looks like this is more of a possibility :( Oh well - maybe next week? At any rate I'll see you Friday for the Times-Up ride!

Hot dogs and beer? Coney gets my vote, but I can't make it tonight. Do we have to fight the Turnbull A.C.'s on the way out there?
How about next Tuesday?
Turnbull A.C.? If we get into a fight I'd have your back! (on the way out the door) :D
Yay for Coney Island next Tuesday! (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rSF8I2tDdy0)

Next Tuesday is a definite maybe for me. Take Ocean Pkwy all the way out?
The last time I went we went down 4th Ave until we got onto the bike path in the 60's or 70's, took that the rest of the way out.

You took Shore Parkway? Was it windy?
How about this wed or thursday?
Wasn't too windy.
So, no rain tonight. I went down to the ferry, then back up in a Manhattan loop with a ton of climbing up in Inwood Park all the way to the top of that cliff. Boy I'm tired - but need to get a bit in shape for Saturday :)
I can do nights after 11 PM on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays.
Let's shoot for next Tuesday for a Coney Island trip! Jyossarian and I can pick you guys up on the way out there :)
Next tuesday I'm heading out to vegas until sunday heh. Of course I'm always down for a ride next sunday.
Doh!
I'd be up for a ride after the 5 BBC. Actually - a ride out to Coney Island after that day would be awesome.
Oh, and I have a few other people who are interested in next Tuesday so it looks like I'm doing it one way or another.
Doh!

Still seriously thinking about this - any takers?
I'll be up for cruising around on sat evening.
Wait - Sunday or Saturday?
Which part of Sat didn't you understand? :p
Next Tuesday, being May 8, you're talking about a trip to Coney Island? After 11 p.m.? Why so late?
No, Tuesday after work...say 7, 7:30 ish. The other nights I can't.
Saturday I have an all night blues party to go to if I sleep after our ride up to Nyack :)
Tuesday sounds great. Where do you ride?
I'm thinking of leaving Manhattan around 7ish, going across some bridge to Brooklyn, get to Fourth Ave until the 70's, bike path and all the way there. Where are you in Brooklyn?
Depending how much beer and dogs are consumed the ride back is optional :D
I'm in Park Slope, but I work in Manhattan. (Times Square.)
Do you ride to work? If so we can leave from there (I'm not far from there).
jyossarian?
Count me in. By Tuesday, I'm sure I'll have devised a plan of how not to carry my work clothes on a ride to Coney Island....

If you wanted to you could drop them off at my place, pick them up on Wednesday.

I'm seriously thinking about cheese fries and fried clams. So I might still be in. Ya'll bringing locks and chains or just a u-lock?
Yes, just drop off your private dirty underwear at his place..
Not even - Nathans has a bunch of outdoor tables and whatnot unless you wanted to sit on the sand.
Wait - he only wears underwear to work?! I thought they got rid of most of those places in Times Square....
So, from pushing my mtb around all weekend since I'm waiting for the rear wheel for my roadie my knees are really aching. I think it would be better for me to push it back one more week :( Really pissed but so be it. If you guys want to go go for it - but I'd love to do it again next Tuesday.
I'm happy to push it back to next Tuesday. Count me in for the 15th.

FYI - The hotdogs have a nice snap when you bite into them, the onions have the slightest little kick, the cheesefries are cheesy, the fried clams could use a little less batter and a regular lemonade is big. The Nathans on the boardwalk isn't open yet nor is the bar right next to it although it looks like they're getting ready to open for the season. Also, the Cyclone and Astroland weren't open last night at 8pm. No crowds although there were a few intrepid travellers venturing out to Surf Ave. for a hotdog.
*drool* Good news is that the wheel should be here this week.
*Crossing fingers*
So tomorrow, to Coney? What's the plan?
I figure lets meet up at my place - it's on the way for both you and jyossarian. I'll PM you my address. If anyone else wants to go PM me!
I guess maybe meet at my place between 7-7:30, leave at 7:30? Too late, not late enough?

Could we leave earlier?
We can definately meet earlier! What time works for y'll?
I know svloid is in Vegas this week.
Does anyone ride in central park at night other than with the group ride the first friday of the month? Haven't been.. just wondering how safe it is.
People do - it's fairly safe. The group rides are neat because they go all over the place, but you'll see a good handful of people riding loops.

Hey Air, how about 6 pm? Gets us out to Nathan's close to 8 pm. It gets chilly out there.

Torps, I ride a couple of nights a week. It seems pretty safe to me. There are cops stationed on the east & west sides, before Harlem Hill & on the south side.
I usually ride between 8:30-11pm. You won't find a ton of bikers riding after 10:30 or so, but there are a surprising amount of people in the park until midnite. Joggers, walkers, peeps walking their dogs, tourists, etc.
It's worth riding with a front & rear light. Lots of wrong way cyclists & runners in there after dark. And the occasional random Park vehicle.

Newbie here, I might join in on tomorrow's ride. I did that ride once, Ocean Parkway was a bit of a pain with all the traffic lights. Hoping that 4th Ave. route to the bike path is better. Where exactly in Brooklyn are you guys meeting? I can't bring my bike to work (building doesn't allow it) so I'm going to need to get home and then hop on the bike.
Welcome! Jyossarian will meet me at my place near Times Square on the east side - looks like 6. Bklyn PMed me, wanted to swing past Park Slope somewhere on the way. Are you coming in on the Path? If so I'm 5 mins from there if you go to the 33rd Street station.
