Plus if I wash out, the road is going to eat my cargo shorts rather than my expensive bike pants.

Well, I did just this last night, narrowly missed my ratty cargo shorts, and burned a nice hole through the left knee of my Louis Garneau winter cycling pants. I was able to repair the hole by stitching the hole in the fabric lining and duct taping the hole in the outer shell. I guess thats what I get for mentioning that my shorts are to save my pants. My shorts got offended and refused to take the fall!

The key is to "peg" them.

plan a: go to staples, get a box of 10 "binder clips". $5. Fold your right pants leg at the angle, and clip from the bottom.

plan b: Get a reflective velcro ankle band at your LBS. $5. Wrap around your pants at the ankle and go dorkily on your way.

plan c: do nothing, and watch pants be eaten by sprocket, usually while climbing some nasty hill.

Edit: Make that a box of 144 Binder Clips (http://www.staples.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/StaplesProductDisplay?prodCatType=0&storeId=10001&catalogId=10051&langId=-1&productId=15983&cmArea=SEARCH) for $5.58

You forgot to mention that you can also just tuck your pantleg into your socks and not have to worry about it, and only your right leg, not both, so you dont have to look like a mountie

plan d: (caution: fasion backward solution) tuck right pant leg inside sock. When you get to class, un-tuck.

+1 Less to drag around. About 1/2 block before the destination, I just pull the cuff out of the sock and arrive OK. People see the sock thing while biking and don't say much. But they really stair if you walk around like that (away from the bike).

I browsed through the thread but in case I missed someone else suggesting it, sorry, but. . . What about some leather spats? I'm sure you could find something stylish as well as functional.

I really like these, (http://www.chromebags.com/products/apparel/show/44/) but a little costly.
