Just saw an article in the newspaper today. Apparantly, the old 220-age for estimating maximum heart rate has no clinical basis.

I suppose someone just came up with it as a "rule of thumb".

I have found from personal observation that it can be quite a long ways off. I have friends who diverge quite a ways from the estimate.

I suspect that training schedules based on amount of time spent at various heart rates are somewhat bogus also. However, it is a good thing to exercise at different levels of intensity so they got that right. I am just rather skeptical that a very structured and very specific training schedule makes that much sense. I suspect that people vary enough that different people require different schedules to maximize performance. I think the old saying is "train your weaknesses and race your strenghts".

The heart rate monitor section of this page gives some info on this. Sally Edwards method, while probably not as accurate as a laboratory type test situation, is exercise based, so is probably fairly accurate.

The thing I was pointing out that a researcher did a literature review and apparantly there is no published data supporting the old 220-age as maximum heart rate. I suspect that same is true for the popular training zones based on percantage of maximum heart rate.

I have done some research and doing it is not easy to get decent support for a working hypothesis especially when you have to have valid statistical support. I suspect that most of these training things are based on some one dreaming up a number and then just writing it up in an exercise book.

They might make some sense, but I would suggest that one take these things as being no better then guesses rather then proven techniques.

Try looking for training based on lactate threshold, it is at least measurable and puts everyone on the same page for training purposes.

I'd suggest doing a lactate threshold test.
whats that you say?
well the answer is here in these very forums
