The Fort Collins District Attorney's Office reports that two 17-year old
men charged in the string of baseball bat attacks on cyclists in Fort
Collins will be tried as adults in court. Victims, Bicycle Colorado, and
the cycling community at large have encouraged the DA to prosecute as
extensively as evidence warrants and to try these individuals as adults,
particularly in light of the repetitiveness, and seriousness of the
offenses. The cases will be assigned to an adult court in the next few weeks.

Which only goes to prove the old adage...what is a conservative? A liberal who just got mugged! .

Nice! I've not heard that one before...but I'm sure it's quite true in many cases!

Am I missing something here? I do not perceive crime victim advocacy as particularly liberal or conservative.

WTF?!? Why is this turning into political debate? If you're going to pull crap like this go to the proper forum. Personally I think they should string the little $^%$ up by their 'nads and let the victims have "Pinata Time" with them.

I agree with Raiyn, around here I am seeing an upswing in punks messing with cyclists. A supermall went in next to the inter-urban bike trail and these punks have apparently been hanging out(there is a 15 theatre multiplex) harrassing cyclists for money etc. They all need to get a strong message. I could say more about what will happen if they try to attack ME with a bat or something, but I'll leave it at this....tom

It's the current disease of society - lack of accountability.
Parents not holding their kids accountable from the time they're little...and then we wonder how kids can turn out this way. It's no mystery to me!

Punk Piniata's - I like it!

Hey don't give punks a bad name! These guys are scumwads who don't know who MC5, Black Flag, or Joe Strummer are.

Hey BikeCOLORADO, it really sounds dangerous in your part of North America. Now its ruffians with clubs, before that it was dogs attacking you and a friend! Man you have it rough! The only dangers in my city are potholes and medicated senor-citizens driving cars.

Raiyn...Yes I should not say "punks", they are little wannabe gang type thugs, around here anyway. .....tom

Don't read too much into my post. No intent to turn it into a political debate on my part. It's just the first thing that popped into my head when I read RoughStuff's post.

BINGO!!!! exactly, and an excellent riposte. Wait till all these born again 'give us this day our daily Rush' types discover what is happening to some of our civil liberties. I know that moods and tastes change, but now with shows like "LAw and Order" and "Crime Scene Investigation" you'd think all the cops were these incredible do-gooders who never framed a suspect, dropped a dimebag for a shakedown bribe, lost a piece of evidence, hassled a 'fag' at a roadside rest area, or sat in the coffee shop. Blah!!! Its enought o make ya wanna be a lawyer and join the ACLU.

I wouldn't be getting too excited about the "tried as adults" thing just yet. I've seen plenty of adults using their cars to assault cyclists and getting off extremely lightly. Granted, this is a start and creates some interesting possibilities, but it's no guarantee that justice will be served on this occasion.

Thanks for the laugh, that's great.

Is Ali G shown in the states? He takes great fun at pointing out that these young boys are wanna-be rappers. He is a white guy, convinced (acting) he is a black rapper, it's very funny and very poignant.

CHEERS.

Anyway, back to the topic.
The main benefit of trying the attackers as adults is that they can be identified by name in the media and made examples.

(Most newspapers and broadcasters shield the name of juvenile suspects on the (dubious) theory that they may grow out of it and it's unfair to tag them with the publicity if they ever go on to law-abiding lives.)

I hope they're fairly punished but the publicity is even more important to promote cycling safety.

Unfortunately it's that time of the year... I had a group of kids try to run me off the road last week. I decided to carry pepper spray with me from now on. Not that pepper spray is great defence against a half ton car but I'm a big guy and if I can get them to stop then I can have fun beating them to death with my bike.

The average car weighs 3000 lbs. I'd rather take on a half ton car any day of the week than one that weighs 1 1/2 tons.

Aw man, they would be dissapointed if they tried to attack me while biking. I carry like a hot $2 around, so if I bonk or something I can get a powerbar. $2 probably isn't worth going to jail for, but you never know.

phatman....unfortunately it has gone beyond just asking for money, twice that I have heard of they stopped cyclists asking for money and when they stopped they were assaulted. Nearby there is a highway overpass and the bike trail goes under it, apparently they have jumped out from hiding under there and knocked two young riders off their bikes and stolen them. It's getting out of hand.....tom

Don't kid yourself. People have been mugged in Surfers Paradise for a lot less.
