What do you guys know about the Scott bike? It looks pretty good spec'd for that price..

It doesn't have disc brakes... but besides that what am I missing... heck of a deal it sounds like...

one of my X-girl friend used to ride a Scott road bike.....she liked it a lot. She also had a Scott's mountain bike that I rode a few times. I think it was called Montana.....It is comparable to any other quality brand at their price point. I absolutely love the frames on those two bikes......I wish I had enough money to buy one...........the problem is my santa already got me a Rockhopper frame and a bunch of other goodies...

I picked up my 06 Kona Caldera for ~$720 from a LBS. I'm happy with it.

Here are more GREAT deals! I bought the Iron Horse Warrior Expert 2 weeks ago at a Performance sale...best hardtail I have ridden (gave away the Rockhopper to nephew). It came with Avid 5 disc brakes, Avid 5 levers, SRAM 7 drive train, WTB wheelset (eyletted), TRuVative, Marzocchi shock, love the ride...it's slightly more compact than my Rockhopper.

I just checked the spec's on the Warrior Race...if Performance would have had it, this would be my choice. At $599. with XT, Tora suspension, and high end discs, I don't see anything near it at this price.

That Scott Scale 60 will cost about $660 total with Disc Brakes (does STP charge tax to GA resident?).... WOULD you get it for that price over the Kona Cinder Cone at $700 +tax

STP does not charge sales tax for GA. they are located in WY.....I would get it for that price over '07 Cinder Cone....and its not really comparable cause Scott has much better drive train and if you get the Avid BB5s from this site (http://www.jensonusa.com/store/product/BR406F00-Avid+Bb+5+Disc+Brake+Oe.aspx) or BB7's (http://www.jensonusa.com/store/product/BR403C05-Avid+Bb-7+Mechanical+Disc+Brake+07.aspx) with 203mm rotor (depending on your needs and riding style)....you will end up with a hell of a bike.....$1000+ value bike I would say....

do a web search....also, I get it from a backpacker forum......backpacking is my secret hobby...as I am getting older I am enjoying backapcking more......and the folks in that forum are little older (on average, and this is not verified info)....so I dont feel that old myself, as I do here.....

I hear you.......I myself came bact to MTBing after a 7/8 year gap. Before I used to ride GT bikes and loved them. But when I got back to MTBing in 2002/2003, I was surprized to see GT's down fall, and was unsure about what to do. A lot of people from this forum helped me, including LowCel, gastro and others.

But, the first thing I did was buy a GT bike (avalanche 1.0). it was an okay bike.....but I kept on wanting more......Then I bought a K2 Zed 4.0 2004, but my brother kept wanting it and I finally gave it to him. Eventually I decided to get the best hardtail that I can afford It was a Kona Cinder Cone 2004. although I was not riding anything too challenging, I wanted a bike that has a lot of potentials that I can grow into, if I decided to. I think thats the nature of this hobby, you want the best.....I liked Kona's previous frame/tube (pre 2005) desing on their hardtails. I am not a fan of their new boxy tubing...

anyway, the point is, if you are anything like me, you may get by with a minimalist bike, but you will keep on wanting more....so, buy the best you can afford right now so that you dont have to do any immidate upgrade......and remember, upgrades are lot more expensive than if you can get a good set of stock equipment.....upgrades add up very quickly....

So, if I were you I would need less upgrades on the Scott than on the Cinder Cone. Scott has top of the line drive train, cranks, decent wheels, and a sweet frame....where as the Cinder Cone does not stand out in any particular area IMHO...

but you have to be convinced...its your decision....but, spending a little more now on a complete bike may save you a lot in future upgrades.....

17.5 Fisher feels great... I ride an 18in Trek now... I like the Kona 18in but didn't try a 17 inch... Would the 17 inch Scott be the right size and feel?

I rode Scotts Montana and GF's Tass (with and without the genesis geometry)......the regular Tass was comparable to Montana in terms of frame geometry and desing....although the components on the montana were not as good as the tass...

so, if you compare the frame to frame and the geometry its pretty close.....now, with Genesis geometry the the effective top tube on the tass would be longer than the Scale 60.This will give you a more upright position but would not be as efficient as Tass in climbing long inclines/hills. What I gather is Scott Scale 60 is more like all around mountain bike that adds comfort and efficiency....where as Tass's genesis geometry has a more stretched out and race oriented XC feel to it..... shorter head tube also gives you more responsive handling (amongst other things).....

so, simply, If you ride regular trails for all day long and dont race or do long climbs Scott would be more comfortable.......but, if you want a quick XC race oriented mountain bike Tass or GF's genesis geometry bikes would be the way to go.....

that is the closest I can get in terms of comparison.....sorry not much of a help...

I was just referring to size on the Fisher and Trek.... so in your opinion 17 inch Scott would feel aboul the same as 18 inch Kona or Trek? As mostly I have only ridden 18 inch (trek, kona, haro) ecxcept for 17.5 in Fisher.

not at all............I like a good pair of V's over mechanicals.......Hydros are a different question.....

and the thing is...the Scott comes with disc set up...so you can put the disc on anytime you want........dont sweat too much if you are not riding in snow or heavy rain.....

I think riding V's will also give you an idea if you even need discs or not.......if you do probably in a year or so (save up) you can buy a high quality disc brake, rather than the average to low quality ones that come on the bikes (at this price range)......

amongst all the bikes you have discussed and considered.......this is the best deal.....by far, specially if you are buying from a local dealer....

let me make the decision for you ---- Ha ha.......

First Caldera ($625 as per your estimate)

Second Scott Scale ($515 with discount coupon)

Third Cinder Cone...... (I dont know)

So, if money was a concern, I would save $110 and get the Scale 60 (also you dont need to pay tax on that. I dont know how much tax you have topay for Caldera). if you can stretch and swing that $110+ tax, definitely get the caldera..... I dont thing you can get terribly wrong with either......

It doesnt bother me. It's pretty plush for a stock fork. If I ever do upgrade, this fork's going to go on another bike, probably a singlespeed.

I picked up a Scott Scale 60 for my son -- 15" frame. He is 12yo, 5' tall, and weighs 80lbs. What specific items would you upgrade during the initial assembly? brakes ? fork?

great buy for your son. thats a very decent bike with a good frame and a great set of components.

its my personal opinion....I would not change anything now. I would put it together and let him ride it for a while. Then you guys will have a better idea about what you like and what you dont. and upgrade the components as they break or get old. That fork is a nice one, I would not change that. same goes with the break. but, some where down the line he may want some disc brakes......let him save up for a good set of Avid mechanical (BB7) disc brakes......or you could surprise him with a good set of hydrolic brakes next cristmas or his birthday......
