Introductions - Another new guy from Nebraska

Just joined yesterday. I have been commuting to work since May, and am really enjoying it. It's about 13 miles each way, and over 12 of it is on the Keystone and Big Papio bike trails in Bellevue and Omaha, which is really nice because once I get on the trail I can ride nonstop all the way to the building where I work. I was wondering if I would be able to do this all winter, but after yesterdays ride in to work (11 degrees and 20 mph headwind) I figure that it probably won't be a problem. I'm really having fun with this. They think I'm crazy at work when I show up on the bike in this weather.

Do they clear the snow off the bike trails? They dont do it here, but just let the cross country skiers use them. MAny cyclists dont like bike trails because of dog walkers and roller bladers, but if the trail avoids road intersections I find the ability to maintain a steady pedalling rythm makes the ride a lot more enjoyable.

This is the first winter that I've been commuting, and so far we've been lucky enough to not have any snow. I think I remember seeing a tractor with a snow blade clearing the trail last year, but I'm not sure if it is a priority, or if they just get to it after everything else. The trails here run along the Papio creek (and Missouri river), and are maintained by the Papio-Missouri river natural resources district. They are on top of flood control levees and I believe they also use them for maintenance.

Lucky you. I live in west Omaha near the West Papio trail. Unfortunately, it is NOT connected to the other trails. And since I work at UNO... . Maybe someday -- but I will be retired before then.

:rolleyes:Hi Great that you are bike commuting. Did it for years in the service but, here in the big O, it is hard to find an east west route. I'm West O, 161xx Millard, and work downtown, but the trails all seem to run along the creeks, north to south, and are great to ride, if you are not trying to get anywhere.

SabreMan's still with us, but KeystoneKid last visited in May of this year. I hope the commuting didn't do him in :eek: !
