I am building a mid-80's Alan made cyclocross bike with parts that would have originally been on it. It's going to be mostly Super Record parts. My question is, what brand/model rims would have been common on cross bikes in the early/mid 80's? Tubular or clincher?

I think tubular Mavic GP4's might be appropriate, maybe even Ambrosio montreal's.

There was only one way to race cross in the 80's and that was tubulars.

I have a set of used but almost perfect Mavic GL330 rims and a set of used but quite good Matrix ISO rims.

The Mavics don't even have any brake lines on them, 32 hole, and would be the rim that the top guys were riding. They are TOO LIGHT for big guys on road tires but with cross tires you could get away with being a super 200+ lber.

The Matrix ISO rims were the one's most often used for cross. They're a rounded trianglar cross section more commonly known as "aero" at that time. They're also 32 hole and have some brake lines on the braking surfaces but not much. No grooves or anything like that.

I have some older sewup wheels as well. Probably with Campy hubs but I'm too lazy to go down into that cold garage and look. I know that I do have a set of C-Record hubs with Record Strada rims built by Wheelsmith for a part-time pro of the time. They're 7-speed freewheel hubs of course.
