During last Sunday's group ride I noticed my rear derailer was kind of bulking during upshifts in the last five of so on a ten gear cluster. It looks like it is spooling out cable as the little red ball indicator moves inboard, but the derailer shifts to the smaller cog rather slow. Any ideas?

TIA
Keith

Unhook the rearmost portion of the derailleur cable housing (the part that ends at the derailleur itself) and grease or tri-flo the cable. Dirt builds up there pretty easily and can often slow the shift down.

Sounds like your cable is kinked or dirty. It is not allowing the rear derailleur spring to pull the cable freely to the smaller cogs.

Replace housing and cable.

Thanks guys, that was what I was hoping to hear.

Next question. Do I need a special cable, or will any good quality cable work. I don't need the little ball thingy to tell me what gear I'm in. If it's too hard to pedal, I just downshift.
