EDIT: Time to 9am start

Lets try and get started an hour earlier to have a lil more time to explore and ride some other sweet trails. I'm thinking of doing everything the same up to Chola, then at the top of Chola we can hit some other trails, like Stairsteps that go into the Canyon farther North and explore out there. Or hit up Mathis or Rock IT. If you need a 9am ride time Speak up, and we'll set it as that:D

Location: Aliso Woods Dirt Parking lot, $2 for parking
Meet time: 8:30am
Ride time: 9am
Ride type: Intermidate skills 15-18 miles
End milage may vary compared to the last ride since the second half will be different, either shorter or longer. We'll play it by ear and legs when we get on top of Chola

This will be a GREAT ride to get your legs warmed up for Sunday's burrito century, not to mention all the party folks drinking that night, at least our LEGS will be ok enough for the burriot ride:D :D

San Diego would be quite a drive for me but I could do it sometime if I plan it far enough in advance.

Tracy! Hi!
Is there any way you could give Wayne a call to see if we could persuade him to do a Irvine ranch BF ride?
I'm thinkin' Limestone canyon to the sinks...
:D :D It would make us ( well me) really happy. I think there would be a good response to this!

I don't mind driving to new trails, I LIKE new trails and kinda getting bored of the ones by me. Sycamore Canyon would be the spot I'd recommend for a BF ride though. But thats in Poway but WELL worth the drive, it's an ALL around ride:D

we'd be in for this at 9 a.m. but 8am! ack! we have over about a 2.5 hour drive to get there! you all know we don't mind driving to a LOT of rides.... but let's make the start times friendly! lol! it's one thing getting up at 3 in the morning for a summer ride....

starting at 9 still gives you over 7 hours daylight to ride in! that's plenty of time!

there is a hiker trail that goes around this drop in:D but you may have to walk down these two short sections. The water breaks are the challenge:D

nah NO worries there's a way around this semi-crazy section:D there is a fireroad leading from the parking lot past the burnt ranch house to a 4 way crossing, we can meet at that crossing:D Or since you will have the head start, you can follow that fire road up to the look out point and take views of this

http://i43.photobucket.com/albums/e359/jsigone/MTB/SS%20in%20Sycamore/2006_0930Sycamore0026small.jpg

on the bottom is the fire road you just came up, that green patch of trees is where we'll be coming from when we do this ride. There is a bench up there and one of the cleanest portacans I've seen in my life. Even has a foot pump action sink:eek:

I'm not trying to get you hurt:D I wouldn't allow myself to take you on crazy trails. Honestly Sycamore Canyon OTHER then the first section is the best well rounded place to ride. Most of the trails are single track that winds through the creekbed trees and bushes. It will keep you on your toes but no drops, hucks or huge rock gardens to worry about. It just gets a lil tight in someplaces with the trees and bind corners. I like to do the climb up to the lookout cuz thats basically the only climb there other then the one getting back to the cars. I mainly ride that place for the tight creekbed, helps keeps my reflexes up and sharpens the bike handling skills all while have fun:D One day I'll take you there:D and I'll be a NICE tour guide:D

So how tough is this proposed ride, really? Does intermediate refer to condition of rider, or experience? On the MTB, I've got one fairly well, and the other not so much : ).

I do hope to make it, if it isn't too technical crazy.

no, no. sorry, I guess it did look that way. I should have explained somehow that that was an edit to a post where I was asking if the start time had been changed. i read the edited OP and realized my post was a little insistent. intermediate refers to milage, and rider experience/confidence. I won't lie, some of the trails ARE intemidating, but ALL are very doable.

Hey Mo, this is ONE trail you NEED to ride!!!! I'll have to take you up on another weekend, the DH's there are a BLAST and very fast switchbacks. The last DH we went down was Meadows and that lil trail kicked butt. Very fast switch backs, sharp blind turns that you have to rail through and leaving you dive bombing into the corners with late front braking to get your frill factor in:D It would be fun just to climb that and keep doing repeats on that bastard:D

I need someone to fix my brakes first. I'm clueless when it comes to hydros.

jsigone
12-05-06, 10:19 AM
bleed it like you bleed your brakes on the car, same thing. If you EVER remove the front or rear tires, you NEED to put a shim (to mimic the rotor) in between the pads so it does not compress and your brakes and $hit when you get to the trail.

Nope. The extent of my car-working-on-ification has been ripping out the entire interiors of my last 4 cars to install a nice stereo. I've changed the spark plugs, once. I've taken a wheel off, once. I've cleaned my K&N filter, once.

My rule of thumb: Never take the time to learn to do yourself what you can pay someone who already knows how to do it.

I've done almost everything to my last cars. Motor swaps, headgasket, timing belts, tranny swaps, clutch jobs, rear end swaps, snapped axles. I was never afraid to tackle a job. I did my own clutch job w/o reading anything, just ripped it out, swaped the clutch plates and all and bingo. All simple. I never had the money to PAY someone to do work I can do myself. Plus that was considered "upgrade" money to pay for labor.

Mo'Phat
12-05-06, 10:58 AM
Have a couple of kids and see how much free time you've got to throw a wrench on the car...or how much money you've got left for upgrades...or how much you really want to work for the fun of it. ;)

I've ridden most of the trails. I consider myself to be low intermediate on both skills and endurance. Some of the trails such as the main trail Wood Canyon and the flat singletrack - Coyote Run are very doable and a blast to try. Some of the trails are just a grind, such as Cholla or Mathis up and some are very technical and may require some thought before trying. Mathis both up and down is what I consider to be intermediate-advance. Trails like Rock-It, Meadows is more Advance and some like 5 Oaks is Advance-Expert. Use your judgement.

It's one of those things... if a person has good skills and is strong they would probably think something like Cholla is easy but for a newbie or someone working on strength it is hard, both up and down. Once you get to the "back side" of the Park, things become more advance.

Ok.....I'm picking up the jerseys from Paul during the week but I'm torn about doing this ride simply because that would mean making the trip down to the OC and back to L.A. three times like within 24 hours.....the mtb ride, the party, and the burrito ride. If I do this ride, of course I'll bring the jerseys along for all those involved.
