We have a minivan and a sedan with a regular trunk - which would be easier to transport my bike across several states? We are not using a moving company - just putting everything into the cars. The bike is too large to get a space inside. I just need one that will get us home. I'm not sure I want to use it afterwards. Where do I start and what exactly am I looking for? Thanks!

The cheapest would be one of those that attaches via straps to the trunk or the back of the minivan. You can probably spend about $30-40 on one. You should just be sure to check it and tighen the straps every time you stop. Those things have a way of working loose on very long rides. That said, I have never had a problem with one.
You could just keep it in case you ever do need to use it, or sell it on e-bay or craigslist and try to recoup some of the cost.

Take your bike apart and put the pieces inside the cars. Disassembled it's much easier to find places to fit all of the parts. Minus the handlebars and cranks, for example, your bike frame will probably fit on top of the pile in the back of the minivan.
Inside the cars the bike is more secure from theft, it's out of the weather and road crud, and you don't have to worry about the bike rack straps coming loose. Cheaper too.
