Mountain Biking - Our sick dirtjump site... PROGRESSION!

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

this will be constantly updated with new pics so we can all see the progression.
March 22nd 2006 it looked like this...

June 30th (2 crude photoshopped pics)

November we gave them an overhaul from the summer beat down. They now look like this. (with us not building for 5 months in the summer)
http://www.cyberdynemedia.com/pics/djnov06.jpg
Nov 25th build day added a run in with a drop, shaped the 2nd jump kicker, and 2nd jump left hip.

the new run in

And now the 27th, the extra roller has been added for more speed on the main line.

Nice! I love the location, so ghetto. And that little vert wall looks like at lot of fun.
Also having those rocks around is a big +! Do you use them as filler in your jumps?
Edit: And I notice that some one painted over the graffiti under the bridge, are you concerned about that?

you got it ;)
the site's also right in the middle of a woods, so lots of logs to salvage. (no, we don't chop down living trees)
Just curious.. did you get permision to build those in whatever city your in?
Looks sweet btw.

nope, but if you look at the pillars as time progresses, the town has been down to clean up graffiti. they know that we're there, but haven't done anything.
actually come to think of it, i don't think it's the town's land, as it's under the 407 ETR, which is owned by a private consortium... but either way, they know, but likely don't care because we aren't structurally damaging anything... but i like to think that they're riders too ;)
Looks great, let see some action shots :)

Whether it's private property or city owned land, there is always someone you need to ask.
Either way, I hope you're able to keep them, and continue making them better. Ride on!
and some action shots would be good. :D

Lokks like a great use of some unused land. Sweet.
Careful, bums like to live under those overpasses.. maybe you can get some pics of them hitting the jumps though..
good weather protection? or is that actually bad because you end up with too dry of land?
the wonginator
12-04-06, 05:17 AM
it's good weather protection, because if we need wet land, we can just go right at the edge of the grass line. it's perfect.
Thats a really sweet spot, cool stuff

I thought about that too. I think the place looks great though, and that seems like you would have some nice rain cover too.

pete, the cloth underneath is still there. we have only removed the rocks.
oh, you can't see it good in the pictures, but beyond the last set of posts is actually a creek... we're gonna build a rivergap :D
I can see the engineer and liability folks having issues with you removing the riprap from the embankment (it's put there to prevent the ground from eroding and underminng the structure).
I was thinking the same thing too. I suspect this will be the reason they throw you out of there eventually.
If that's in response to me you're making an erroneus assumption.
If it's not in response to me, it would be easier for people to understand your posts if you actually quoted the person that you're replying to.
HTH.
I'll make sure to use quotes next time. By the way, "erroneus" is erroneous.

The rocks are put there to prevent erosion...
Removing the rocks leaves a gap in the protective structure that can let the underlying dirt erode away.
i see your point, but there isn't any water passing through where the structure is anyways, so the point is relatively moot. the only possibility of it eroding all away is if we ride it too much... in that case, we can easily rebuild it. underneath the layers of dirt is actually concrete slabs, so there's not too much concern there.

Do you think it was free to have that erosion control put there? Whoever paid for that overpass is going to care regardless of whether it matters. Don't forget about wind erosion.

I don't think a reasonable person could say that what those boys are doing presents a threat to the stability / safety of the bridge, which most certainly gets inspected on a regular basis. If the inspector deems the damage to be a problem, then revmonkey and friends can expect to have their jumps plowed. If not, well, the spot looks like it has lots of unrealized potential. That's the nature of unsanctioned trail building - your hard work is always and ultimately subject to the whims of someone who doesn't "get it," whether it be ignorant riders, bureaucrats, or otherwise.
As a taxpayer, I am not concerned in the least that an infinitesimal amount of my money might have to be sacrificed to replace riprap if it meant that some kids could ride their bikes under a bridge when it rains.

No, you don't see my point, but that's ok. When it rains the line that you've exposed that is not underneath the overpass will erode.
The riprap, and the filter cloth that underlays it, was put there to mitigate erosion.
Erosion can be caused by heavy rains, or by massive flooding. Since the overpass spans a waterway, the folks laying in that toll road were required to lay in that riprap/filter cloth in anticipation of "hundred year" flooding.
Hopefully the powers that be will continue to ignore the jump lines but if you guys want to hedge your bets, I would suggest that you make the riprap look as undisturbed as possible lest the 407 ETR folks get their panties in a bunch.
p.s. If you guys are trying to keep that spot "secret," per your forum, why post a kilo marker pic/name it after the kilo marker?
Canuck A: I wonder where those sweet jumps are, eh?
Canuck B: Maybe marker 92.5 on the 407 ETR, eh?
yeah, but it's a pain to get to, the site.
i see your point about erosion, i thought you were talking about the run-in under the bridge.
the spell-check nightmare is because i was stoned at the time i made it... and the signmaker only allows a certain amount of characters... i had to do a bit of compressing.
I don't think i've ever spelled worse just because i was drunk or stoned, but it seems to be the latest excuse. Why not just say you suck at spelling.. its no big deal.

well theres two ways to get there. from the south and from the north. from the north, you have to ride through some woods and some singletrack, easy to get lost. from the south, it leads to a golf course, and a housing development. either way, i doubt that people will specifically drive up to markham just to ride this place, the intent of this was to show you what we have goin on.

I like to substitute capicollo instead of the traditional pepperoni slices. Much tastier. Even better is prosciutto di parma but it can get too salty if not done right.

Because, in all seriousness....no one will make the drive to markham to dj. On this board there might be 10 people and on dropmachine, they all likely already know. Markham isn't really a hotspot for anything...well..except this dj area.

X2. If you want to keep it, try to truck in your own dirt and schlepp rock from an area outside the design of the overpass. Yea it might no be very convenient, but neither is finding a new spot and rebuilding yer jumps.

Red means that they are currently or have very recently visited BikeForums. If it's black that means that they haven't been on for a while.
