Why Geeks and Nerds Are Worth It...
Date: 2005-04-03, 9:30PM PDT

In the wide world of dating, there are many options. Do you go for the flashy guy with the smooth smile, or the dude in the corner typing away on his laptop? The following are reasons why I think my fellow females should pay more attention to the quiet geeks and nerds, and less attention to the flashy boys.

1.) While geeks and nerds may be awkward, they’re well-meaning 9 out of 10 times. That smooth dude with the sly grin and the spider hands? Wonder what HIS intentions are... plus, I’ve never had a geek guy not call me when he said he would. Score major points THERE.

2.) They’re useful. In this tech-savvy world, it’s great to have a b/f who can make your laptop, desktop, and just about anything else that plugs into a wall behave itself.

3.) They’re more romantic than they’re given credit for. Ok true, their idea of romance might be to make up a spiffy web-page with all the reasons why they love you, with links to pics of you and sonnets and such... but hey. It lasts longer than flowers, plus you can show your friends.

4.) Due to their neglected status, there are plenty to choose from. You like ‘em tall and slender? There are plenty of geeks/nerds who are. You like ‘em smaller with more meat on their bones? Got that too.

5.) They’ve got brains. Come on now, how can intelligence be a bad thing?

6.) Most are quite good at remembering dates. Like birthdates and such, especially if they know it’ll make you happy. Due again to their neglected status, they’re more attentive than guys who “have more options”. Plus, with all that down time without a steady girlfriend, they’ll likely have mental lists of all the things they’d love to do once they GOT a girlfriend.

7.) Sex. Yep. Sex. I’m not really familiar with this myself, but I’ve friends who’ve been intimate with geek guys and it’s raves all around. They say a virgin wrote the Kama Sutra... all that time thinking about sex, imagining sex, dreaming about sex, (they are male after all) coupled with a desire to make you happy? Use your imagination.

8.) They’re relatively low-maintenance. Most can be fueled on pizza, Twinkies and Mt Dew. No complicated dinners needed here, so if you’re not the best cook, eh. Can you order a pizza?

9.) Most frequent bars as often as slugs frequent salt mines. You won’t have to worry much about your geek guy getting his “groove” on with club hotties because, frankly, he’ll be too busy rooting around under his computer wondering where that spare cable went. You won’t have to worry about him flirting with other women because, 9 out of 10 times, he’ll zip right by them in a perfect b-line towards the nearest electronics store. I’ve seen this happen.
Me: “Eww. Victoria Secret’s Models... They’re so skinny. How is that feminine? You can see her ribs!”
Geek Guy: “ooooooo...”
Me: “Hey!” *notices he is staring lustfully towards the computer store*
Geek Guy: “What?”
Me: “Never mind...”

10.) Although he may not want to go to every outing with you, you can arrange swaps, as in, you’ll go to his Gamer Con dressed as an elf princess if he’ll take you to the ballet. Plus, if he doesn’t want to go someplace with you, you won’t have to worry much about what he’s up to. You’ll probably come home to find him asleep on his keyboard in a sea of Mt. Dew cans with code blinking from the screen. It’s ok. He’s used to this. Just toss a blanket over him and turn out the light.

11.) His friends aren’t jerks. I can’t stress this enough. You’ll more likely get “Omg! A GIRL!! Can I see?!” than “Hey hot stuff back that ass up here and let me get some grub on...” They’re awkward geeks too and will, 9 times out of 10, treat you with the utmost respect and, more than likely, a note of awe. A cute girl picked one of their clan to date? It could happen to them! Hope! Drag some of your single girlfriends over, open up a pack of Mt. Dew, crack open the DnD set and get working. Nothing impresses geek guys more than a girl who can hack-n-slash (well ok maybe if she can code... a geek can dream).

12.) They’re rarely if ever possessive. They trust you, so you can be yourself around them. You like to walk around the house in a ratty t-shirt for comfort? He won’t care. He does too! They won’t get pissy if you don’t wear make-up or don’t want to bother primping your hair. If you gain a few pounds, they won’t try their best to make you feel like crap.

13.) They’re usually very well educated. Physics majors and the like. See #5. You won’t have to listen to him blathering on about his car (ok maybe a little), he’ll have loads of other interesting things to talk about. Politics, world events, how much the chicken burgers down at the local place rock, so long as you douse them in hot sauce...

14.) You’ll almost never have to hear, “Yaw dawg whazzap!!” plop out of their mouths. Unless it’s in jest. They spell properly, use correct punctuation, and are able to tell the difference between the toilet and the floor. They almost never get “wasted”, so you won’t have to worry about coming home to find him and his friends passed out on the floor amidst a pile of beer bottles. Mt. Dew cans, perhaps...

15.) And the final reason why geeks and nerds make great boyfriends: They actually give a damn about you. Not how you look (though that’s a plus), not how skinny you are, not how much make-up you primp yourself up with, but they like you for you. That kind of thing lasts longer than “DaMN baby you got a fine ass!!!” Believe me.

Money doesn't make the world go round. Nerds do.

Psydotek

Yay for nerds/geeks! I'm both. :D

As for #13, I did used to talk about my car quite a bit though... But only because it was new to me. :) And it was never about how fast my car is was or "Dude, i've got naaaawwwwzzz!" but more about the geeky stuff about cars (brakes, suspension, handling, feel, reliability, maintenance, etc...) because i really wanted to figure out everything about my car. :D I would annoy the crap out of my coworker because that's all i'd talk about for like a year after i got my it (but she's now my girlfriend, go figure).

As for everything else on that list, i'm inclined to agree. Just don't get "nice guys" mixed up with "needy guys". I think #8 and #12 are what separate a nice guy from a needy guy the best. :D

Psydotek what car do you have??

Psydotek

2003 Subaru Impreza WRX. :)

It officially turned me into a car geek to go along with the computer and science nerd that i already was.

Ohh niiiiice I've always liked the WRX, mt I assume right?

Probably best bang for the buck for that price range ^_^, congrats and yours looks awesome!
Have you tried AutoX?

Psydotek

Yep, 5MT and i wouldn't want it any other way short of putting in a dogbox or some straight cut gears (but that's gonna cost some serious $$$). I've done a short autocrossing school out at the California Speedway last year but i have yet to sign up for anything since then unfortunately. I probably will do afew next year since i gotta put my spiffy driving helmet to use again. Didn't have time this year since i was concentrating on doing triathlons and road rallies.

Luwin1026

Nice car, and travels with it, Psydotek!

Just do yourself a favor and don't read that list off to prospective dates. But yeah, geeks are great, and only the smart girls that know that deserve them.

Psydotek... hey, Im a NASIOC guy too! I have a 2005 STi with some mods. :) Currently tuned to about 300whp. Ive done some autocross with it and its been awesome. I love the car 10x more than my old 350Z. (although the Z really looked cool)

This thread kinda talks about "ultra-geeks" as opposed to run of the mill nerds. Im an engineer and work with a lot of "geeks" but none of them go to sci fi shows and dress like elves! lol.

16. A geek is liable to be able to afford to relocate to a tropical paradise at a relatively young age, hire you a full time housekeeper so you can pursue painting and your life long ambition of being fluent in Spanish. We have been married for more than 26 years and yes, I am a geek (maybe I even was a nerd) And name a company after you. And buy you a horse (or 5!) A geek might actually enjoy talking and have something worthwhile to say too.

Oh, and geeks / nerds have a very good chance of being cool eventually. Whereas, that jock is likely to look like a whale on the beach because he won't keep excercising becauses he knows it is good for him.

Geeks are only not cool in school - in the work place, the so called cool people are their peons... ;)

Isn't the STI roughly ~290whp stock? or is it 290 crank?

300 at the crank -

BTW - more off-topic, the STi is a great car. I was tempted to get one as a second car when I had my S2k, and am now tempted to trade in the wife's TSX for one - but she's so close to giving me the green light on an Elise or another S2k next year, so I won't ruffle any feathers right now.

I test drove the STI(it would have been a stretch to buy because it wasnt in my price range but I could afford it) and I thought the shifting was really crunchy. It felt like I was grinding the gears when I would even try to shift smoothly. I later test drove the evo and I thought that was much better.

Personally, I'd get the S2k over any of those...SOoooo niceeee. Not as fast but hella nice

S2k has one of the best shifters in the market - once you experience it, you're left disappointed with almost every other shifters out there.

Psydotek

More OT:

STi was 300/300 crank hp/torque under the old SAE measurements, but when they revamped the SAE measurements the numbers were changed to ~290/290. Actual power output has not changed, just the way it's measured. (wheel horsepower is closer to 230-240 depending on the dyno, WRX WHP is around 170)

I too have heard the S2000 does have the best factory shifter ev4r, but i think i've gotten a pretty fantastic shifter feel with all the stuff i've installed already. :) Oh yeah, crunchy gear shift just means you weren't timing your shifts right. ;) :D I'm just waiting for them to bring an STi Forester to the USDM market. You know, so i could fit like 2 bikes in my car...

And O'RALLY Owlz FTW!

Ok, back on topic. Nerds/geeks are cool. Really.

No no, I was shifting smoothly, I wasn't trying anything crazy...It just feels crunchy compared to other cars I've driven.

crunchy? or notchy?

i miss my notchy short shifter fm my fc3s... i just need a notchy short shift kit in my ms6!!

a bit of both maybe? I drove the 05 iirc...I just remember it wasn't smooth as I would normally expect. Kinda felt like you were powershifting when you are actually using the clutch. Hard to explain

DannoXYZ

Could be synchros, have you tried double-clutching?

If you match RPMs just right, you don't even need to use the clutch.

lyeinyoureye

sounds like t3h sporty clutch, some versions don't feel as smooth as commuter car versions

Rick@OCRR

I drive a Honda Insight. A friend of mine told me "That's the ultimate GEEK car!" But maybe he really meant "NERD" car.
I doesn't go as fast as a WRX or corner as well as an Elise!

Best Regs,
Rick / OCRR

ranger5oh

you are all correct... Stock Sti is 300/300 at the crank. My modded STi is 300 at the wheels. Ive driven an S2k and I wasnt impressed. Personally, I think it is the lack of torque that makes me not like it as much. The car is fast, but it doesnt feel fast. Which is weird. I do however like how they look. I also thought the S2k was loud and clanky. The engine is just screaming all the time, and everytime I shifted it sounded like it was going to break.. although it never felt that way. Its definitely a quality car.. just not a car for me.

STi has its own problems.. #1, most people think it is ugly. Which i kinda agree, but I have grown to love the looks. Basically the reason I got an STi is because it is the fastest and most practical car I could find. It autocrosses like a dream, and I can fit 4 friends in there and luggage when I need to and 2 bikes on the roof. For me, its the perfect car.

vtjim

+1 for geeks and nerds. :)

Hey I had an 02 WRX, modded to stage 2. (~280 at the crank) Then I started bike commuting and stopped driving. Besides, every ricer and his kid brother tried to show me how fast their stock Civics were :D so I sold it and bought an 06 Tacoma. It suits me better though. It carries my bike, no problem, plus diving gear, and many cases of beer.

And my wife is all into the idea of replacing her 97 Legacy Outback with... A Legacy spec.B.

I'd love a Forester STi but who knows when that's coming here?
