Mountain Biking - Make my own disk brakes & mounting?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Anyone ever made DIY disk brakes and mounting on their wheels? Or should I not?
I was thinking V-brakes which stop disks instead of wheels (relocated).
Or would it just be cheaper to buy new ones?

I'm sorry but I have no clue what you are talking about.

maximan1,

it will not work well because the v-brakes cannot apply the force that a caliper can against the rotor.

good luck if you do try though. keep us updated

TIME OUT.

It is disc brakes, not disk breaks or disk brakes. A Disk is to a floppy disk for computers.

Disc is to brakes, discuss.

So please, use proper terminology when talking about disc brakes. Both sound the same, but each one is very different in meaning.

Hmm, I don't know about frisbees, they have that lip on the edge. A 12" Vinyl though, would make a great disc.

Agreed. The leverage would be way off and you could never get enough force applied to stop the rotation unless you did some serious modifications. I won't say its impossible...but it wouldn't be worth it. Unless of course you like to tinker and build odd things. Then it could be fun...

I'm not sure there is enough wheel clearance. Even if there was, you're going to spend more in parts and modifications than you would on last year's mechanical disc brakes. I can't imagine the pads on v-brakes would last in the setup you propose. Too much heat - typically a 6" disc with only it separating the brake pads. This generates tremendous heat. I bet rubber pads would melt if enough force was generated to stop the bike. If you do decide to try it, keep in mind, you'll need disc rotors, which are around $30/wheel.

I've seen Avid disc brakes for around $75/wheel, which come with rotors.

Disc brake mounts are easy.....but you'd have to be awfully dedicated, intelligent and resourceful to even think about doing the rest of it properly.

So really please, if you are going to type about disc brakes, please use proper use of wording. Are you serious!?!? He is only human  . Do your job properly and moderate instead of nitpicking anything and everything that us lowly members speak!

Well, he's gotta learn the proper use of the words sometime. Better to hear it from KonaRider than some of the other members (including myself) who might be a little more forward.

If something as insignificant as a couple of letters out of place bothered me as much as it bothers you, then I'd be boring as hell. I can understand pulling someone up for txt talking in a thread, because that is genuinely annoying and time consuming to interpret, but I didn't look at the thread title and think that he wanted to mount 3.5" floopy disks to his bike. I'm kinda not that stupid.....

Please post a link to the video once you try it out.

Also, it amazes me how unimportant proper English is in this country these days. Personally, I like to be corrected when I write something incorrect.

Wasn't exactly sober at the time when I posted that.;) Going to a wine dinner and having about 10 glasses of wine will do that.

But you still said "It is disc brakes not disk breaks" and he never said "disk breaks". Maybe you did it on purpose, I don't know.
