Everybody, I have an older bike with Shiman RX100 stuff on it, 7spd and it looks like the chain and cassette are in need of replacing. It's starting to skip a little in the middle gears under higher loads. And to be honest I wasn't crazy about the gearing on the bike anyways.
So I just want to make sure, I see that Nashbar sells a Shimano HG50 7spd cassette which they say is compatible with all freehubs, but I want to be sure that it's compatible with the rest of the 7spd drivetrain. Ditto for the chain, I assume any of them that advertise 7spd compatibility won't present a problem?
Thanks for the help.

It should be fine.
The cassette is the same size as the newer stuff, it's just a little narrower.
My upgraded wheels have a 8-9 hub. I just had to put in a spacer. I'm sure the 7-sp cassette is the narrower one.

are you sure it's a cassette and frrehub, not a gear cluster on a freewheel?

Ajay and I have the exact same bike. It IS a cassette. I think it is mid-90's, early cassette.
Can't you break apart a cassette to facilitate cleaning? Drill away the rivets and u're done .....

Ajay and I have the exact same bike.
Hey now! I don't have that fancy-shmancy multi-colored bar tape. :D
Thanks for the help so far everybody, I don't know how interchangeable the actual cogs are in the cassette, but as mentioned I'm not that happy with the gearing as it is right now, it's WAY to wide for living in the land of flatness. Not enough that I would upgrade it for no reason, but if I gotta buy a new one I may as well buy one I'll make use of.
Nashbar has a couple I'm looking at;
11x24 - I like the 24, with a 39x24 gear it should cover me for anything I may hit here. The 11 though is a problem since I don't have any place to really climb, means I don't have any place I can descend, and I'm a ways yet from being able to sprint out a 52x11 gearset.
12x21 - I'm a little concerned about the 21 part, but I think it should cover me for most situations, plus that's about as close to 1-tooth gearing cluster as I can get with a 7spd setup.
