Will be visiting San Diego in late Jan and I would like to rent a bike and roam the area while I am there. I did Google and found places that rent bikes as part of a tour package but that is not want I am looking for. I will have rental car so I can travel the area to get to a good bike rental place but I will be staying in northern San Diego area around La Jolla. I would prefer to find something in that general area so I could roam Mission Beach and points north along the cost. I want a decent road bike or good hybrid...no fat tire bikes. Any recommended bike shops in that general area who will rent a bike. Address? Phone nr?

Also....what would be the recommended route to ride north from Mission Beach or La Jolla area up toward Torrey Pines and Solano Beach?

The only one I know of for sure is Nytro in Encinitas (15 miles north on Coast Hwy) but you can also try UC Cyclery. There's also a fairly new shop in Bird Rock called Velo Culture.

You can rent nice road bikes at B & L Bikes in Solana Beach: http://www.blbikes.com/

And for a superb ride from Mission Bay up the coast to Solana Beach, Encinitas, Oceanside, or points beyond, here's one plotted as an out and back to Solana Beach but you can just keep going north as far as you want. http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/?r=573808
