It's at dog box bikes right now. haven't seen it, apparently different wheels and possibly other stuff. I'm super lucky. Thanks to lilly for spotting it.

a group followed the guy, asked him about the bike in some way, he got spooked, dropped the bike and ran. preliminary report. huge thanks!

my guerciotti, red white blue fade, approx 58. Spidel cranks, phil hubs chrome, mavic open pro reg silver rims, black spokes, etc.

a pair of red velosity rims, (the rear rim has a minor hairline at one of the spokes) and black venus sun-rims, a set of shimano black brakes unused and black handled levers, cable, etc.

Stolen from 980 bush street basement, they cased the place, knew where to look, I'm so mad, but who wouldn't be. please let me know if you have any info. I'll update this post as I get the details clearer.

Please advise on contacting bike shops in the bay area about this, I don't know all of em and I have to deal with the cops right now, I manage my building and there were other storage areas broken into, but don't be fooled, they knew what they were looking for!

That fu(king sucks man. I'll keep a look out around the city.

Damn, they just took the bike?

If that's the case, it shouldn't be too hard to figure out who knew where to look for it and would want it...

Guy'd have to know it was a good bike, follow you home and know how to B&E. Good luck getting it back dude.

That sucks. I'm hooking up the electric fence for the dog up to my bikes, and lock them in a spare bedroom with a guard snake from now on.

That's why I have a Rottwieler/Belgian Shepherd. It won't let anyone in the house if I'm not with them.

Hope you get it back.

Wow, this makes me grind my teeth in anger. Who do you think did this? As other posters said, if they only took that hot as bicycle they were probably after only that and maybe knew you had it?

I cannot even begin to imagine stealing someone else's ride or anything off of their ride; that is like neckin' with another dude's girl!

I hope you get it back. (I'm still grinding my teeth and want to punish the thieves.)

That sucks man. Hope you get the bike back. I'd be devasated if my fixie (or my roadie for that matter) got pinched.

Post on Velospace. Gets lots o' hits.

To search Craigslist across the country, you can type this into Google: "site:craigslist.org/bik guerciotti" - Just in case someone is trying to fence it in another town.

The same thing happened to me. Broke into the lobby of my apartment in the panhandle. Took my bridgestone and left the others. They cut the door jam and slipped in something into the strike plate to open the latch. Do you have renter's insurance?

Check the usual suspects. UN Plaza, Karim's in berekely, Laney College flea (just there last weekend and watched two kids try and sell some mountain bikes they "found" to a guy.)

Good luck...

thanks for the support and suggestions. the cops came by, did a report, sent a crime scene investigator out, took some prints (fat chance there). the rest is up to the insurance co. Still, not the intended outcome. It was 6 degrees of separation I'm sure, which is really the disturbing realization in all of this.

my bike is worth less than the lock that locks it, and it still sits next to my bed at night... granted, it's my only mode of transport (besides walking, but who does that?) so I'm extra careful.

the_loin

I have to go to the shop today and find out. It's at least my frame, which is the hardest part to actually replace in this situation. I'll get back with more info later this afternoon.

So, they got my mavic and phil wheelset, and my original fork (it wasn't on the bike, just in the room it was taken from). The rest is all there, minus grips and cog/lockring, clips and straps. they put my venus rims/velocity hub wheelset on the bike, the same set that was on there before the mavic/phil set, so I got one wheelset back. I got a few versions of the recovery story (more on that later), and apparently there's a good description of the guy, also good news. Overall a happy beginning to an ending of a terrible event, still have to do the insurance thing with the rest of the items, not the worst thing. The online community network is awesome! I'm super happy. Thanks everyone for your concerns, kind words, etc.

truth. that kind of s#!t happens all the time.

Yeah, I had a bike disappear a few days after my friend brought a friend of a friend over to look at a scooter. He bought the scooter, and I suspect he helped himself to the bike. The lame thing is the bike was worth 2 or 3 times what I sold the scooter for.

- man, i lived at 1086 Bush St. in the late '70s...

- nobody was jacking bikes back then...

- but i only paid $350 a month for a two-bedroom apartment (should've kept it, as there is rent control, IIRC - i'd still only be paying less than $700 a month?)

:-)

Ha, we could have been neighbors if you decided to stay there 40 more years.

BTW, this is one of the best stories I've heard in a while. Made my day. I'm stoked you got your bike back. Congrats. Now go find that guy...
