Road Cycling - 100 miles

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
well I know it don't sound like much but I broke the century mark today... cumulative of 2 weeks of riding!
I also got a new/firmer seat today, ANDDDD.... a CATEYE VELO2. Man is this great or what. I dug out my old 4 panel lycra cycling shorts and in a few less lbs from now I will be back in them (mediums).
Next purchase is a newer/better helment and shoes/cleats.
Gotta go... beblest!
That's great.
When you get around to shopping for new shorts, jerseys, shoes, pedals, bike components, etc. the members can always steer you to the best bargains.
Rainman told us about a bargain in shoes last week, so I bought a pair (Shimano R096 I think). Sierra Trading Post, Performance, and Nashbar usually have good deals.
Just curious, did you tell us what kind of bike you have?
Keep us informed of your progress.
Good riding.

Congrats on the 100 mark! Wasn't sure if you were commenting on the firmer seat (yourself) or a firmer saddle? ;)
At any rate, it's fun looking for things for your bike. I keep wavering between, bike shoes/pedals, bike computer, or bike repair stand. Ron, was right, there's definitely some good deals out there for shoes. Most of them I've found on the Internet so far.

Maybe not much in terms of numbers, but it sounds like a wonderful accomplishment in terms of achievement. Congratulations! As the miles add up, you won't be able to feel quite the same jubilation again--so this is special.
BTW, I just put a Velo2 on my road bike a few weeks ago, and love it. What kind of saddle did you install?
s_boy, that is great! John is right...a wonderful achievement! For me, biking has been all about little goals....and before you know it, the little goals will add up to some major accomplishments! We have all either been there, or are working toward it, so we can share in your pride!:)
Keep up the good work!
Thank you all for the encouragement, I tried a few times to post yesterday but from what I understand the server was having some problems.
I broke the another short goal yesterday morning (20 mile route) and peddled 21.5 miles... I had been working up to this trip mentally all week and it went real well.
RonH... I will try to keep up with the info here regarding dot.com deals and the mail order deals as well, I can tell you though I have had my share of problems trying to "save" money in this format. Not from cycling equipment but dealing with music equipment and computer parts. But I intend to get shoes and cleats next... so keep me posted. I have a Schwinn Criss-Cross that I bought new in '91. Its is a nice bike, but I want a really, really nice bike... the material technology is a bit different now than 10 years ago, but amazing a lot of things are still the same.
technogirl... firmer saddle, and yes the seat is hopefully going in like direction... and yours??? :D:D:D. I agree on the fun of shopping around for gear. One of the reasons I have always enjoyed cycling is the technical aspect of the sport which requires the constant equipment reasearch, and the occasional buying and upgrading. I mean come on, if your a runner only, all you have is shoes... how boring!
JonR... having the VELO2 is like having a companion on the road when riding alone, did you see "Cast Away"?... sort of like Wilson :). I bought a Bontrager saddle. It has the slight channel built in it to help keeping the numb area from constant contact with the seat surface. It does work. All I have to do now is get my butt bones used to the less padding. Being a guitar player I equate this to finger calluses... you have to put in the miles.
nebill... doing 21.5 yesterday morning and 13.5 this morning I can see my goals growing already. I really am trying to go slow and build up a training plan that I can live with, but I must admit cycling feels real good this time around.
beblest!
As a former guitar player (wish I still had my guitar--lost it to a pawn shop years ago...) I agree in principle, but I haven't noticed any calluses on my butt! Maybe they form under a couple of layers of fat. :D
Wouldn't have thought to compare the Velo2 to Wilson. (For those who haven't seen the movie, Wilson is the first basketball in history eligible for an Oscar nomination...)
Congratulations on the realistic goals you've set--and it's great always to read of somebody's enjoyment, especially coming back into cycling.

You are on your way, s_boy! 200 miles is pretty significant and 20+ miles in a crack is really something. Think about how far that is. Let's see, you are in North Carolina. 200 miles would clearly get you completely across the state from North to South. In fact, you have ridden the equivelant of starting in the state of Virginia, bicycling all the way through North Carolina, and into South Carolina. Wow, that would be a trip visiting three states. That's pretty impressive.

WAAY COOL S_Boy! Hammer on
Congrats s_boy, it's a great feeling isn't it, keep up the good work. I just completed my first half century ride this morning and it feels great. Speaking of gear has anyone dealt with a company and excuse if I'm wrong called Voler. I saw there website and they have some really nice looking gear.
broke 200 mi mark today. This was not a milestone but definitely closer to 1K which is my next one... thought I'd mention it on this thread.

Oh, come on, let's have it be a milestone! Congratulations.
I now have 108 miles on my cool cyclocomputer that Ba-dg-er graciously gave me.I've had the computer for about three weeks now. The only problem is that I have two wheel sets, and only one transmitter,so when I switch wheel sets I have to move the transmitter. I have forgetten to do so a couple times,so a few miles have gone un-recorded.
broke 300 today... and had my first flat!
glad I had my spare :)
