Mountain Biking - Should I lose the fender? …….or just get a rear one also?

I really did get I because I was sick of getting mud on my face. But I seem to only see them on downhill bikes. Does it make me a dork to have it? Or should I just get one for the rear also. Cause I am sick of all the spray up my back. It was only $6.98 at www.pricepoint.com

HMMMM cant see the pic I will try again

Function over form. Worry less about what others think, and more about what YOU like and you'll be much happier in the long run.

If you ride in a lot of mud, keep it on. That's what it's used for. Personally, I like the "look" of fenders on mtn bikes, but where I ride, it's pretty dry, so I don't need the extra weight and hassle.

My buddy thinks fenders look stupid, but who cares what he thinks!

By the looks of your bike you don't have that on there just for looks so I say if it's working for ya keep it. Personally I think that fender looks good on your bike anyway.

I hate fenders almost more than I hate the look of xc helmets...guess what I still wear a xc helmet too. It may look stupid but sometimes its required. I personally don't think rear is required but a front one definately is. I hate chewing on mud on rides...

Keep it on. It looks great. Do you like it? How well does it work? I've been thinking about adding them to my ride.

Fenders are damn sexy... especially full fenders, followed closely by clip-on fenders the likes of Zefal's Classics. yeahh.

ps, really, fenders are nice.

I have a clip on for the rear, when I need it I use it, as for the dry conditions it's offff. They should come up with a clip on for the front also, so you won't look stupid on a sunny day. (or did they?):D

........I love the mud on the bike, it looks used!

I personally hate the looks of fenders. But if that's what you want, don't let anyone elses views change your mind.

I've been debating getting a 'THE' fender for quite some time. I just don't ride in such muddy conditions to warrant needing one!

But I think they look cool!

I'll have a THE front fender today (from Pricepoint)...my bigger tires (2.4's and soon a 2.5)...kick all kinds of dirt up in my face. I wear gas permeable hard contact lenses, there is NOTHING like bombing down a fast track and getting a piece of dirt under a hard contact lense! Wether I wear sunglasses or not - some dirt always manages to get up into my lenses.

I'm hoping this will help - keep the front! Ditch the rear fender...

I have a THE fender front and rear that I bought from Pricepoint. I don't use it very often, but it's handy when I need it.

johndoug I run a full set of Topeak Defenders on my commuter bike when the weather gets nasty. But due to the quick release mechanism I just pop them off when the weathers is nice. I'm assuming that the fender that you have has a similar mechanism.
Look at it this way: If it makes me feel more comfortable riding your bike - you'll ride more often. However, if you're SOOO concerned about what others might say about what you do so that you can enjoy yourself out there then you probably don't want to ride in the first place.

Personally I hate the look of mudguards. I bought a set, and removed them promptly after seeing them on my bike. It's just my opinion, but if you can't handle a bit of dirt in your face then you shouldn't be on the trails.

Anyway, happy riding, Portent

If you want to talk about dorky looking: I run 1.5 inch slicks with fenders designed for 2 inch knobbies. It doesn't look great but it works.

When it covers you glasses and becomes unsafe to ride mud gaurds are needed...I can chew on dirt but can't take not being able to see.

Well I've got to admit I've never had both eye's covered at the same time, but I except that there could be a safety issue.

But on one hand you say you 'I hate chewing on mud on rides...' and on the other you say 'I can chew on dirt but can't take not being able to see'.

I think it's up to you. I'd get one but I'm just too lazy to install it.
If you're still get very muddy on your next ride try installing the front fender backwards.

I think the front looks cool. I would never put them on because I like the "mud look" on the bike and myself. If you like them keep 'em your bike kinda looks DHish with them on.:D

I don't like lots of things but can still 'take' them...they aren't opposing statements. :)
