View Full Version : Which to get?

The silver ones or the colored ones? I think the silver ones might be lighter, since they are plain, but the colored ones are likely a bit stronger since they have some surface anodization. Are there any others out there that are better as an upgrade? What do you all use? Is a thing of 500 enough?

Though I'm worried about getting the colored ones; my second cousin Elroy might see them and decide to get some just like them, so maybe I should stick with silver so he won't be tempted to copy me!!!!

Then again, what about using wax or Superglue on the cable ends? Though that seems like it would be too flexy, and my shop can't get the right Superglue until November of next year, so maybe I'll use Gorilla Glue instead? What do you all think?

The Jagwires are made in Taiwan so they have to suck.

The silver ones are generic so they are probably made in some Red Chinese prison factory using slave labor.

I would just bust out a solder gun and solder the ends using Finnish solder flux (better for high altitude rides).

But I've heard the Finnish stuff is made with Baltic herring in the process? I don't know if I can go for that sort of thing.

Go for the colored ones, but drill them out to bring the weight down.

Well, I could do that, or just get the 1.2mm ones instead of the 1.8mm ones. Though I think the larger diameter ones would provide less flex. And now I've discovered Shimano and Wheels Manufacturing make them too! I need to find out if theirs are any better, or lighter. Maybe I'll get whichever is the rarer. Or the cheapest. Or the lightest.

This is a very serious enquiry. I can't just decide this sort of important thing on my own, you know.

Cut your cables flush to save weight and less worry!

Actually it is going to come down to a color preference thing, since they are all most likely anodized. Most aluminum bits, silver or colored, are anodized to ****** oxidation. The color itself is not the anodizing; it is a dying process.

Go to your LBS and try out both and see which fits best.

Didn't the last issue of MBA have a comparison in the time-tested "shoot out" format?

They're not nipples. They're cable end ferrules.

That was for the 2007 models. The ones pictured in the original post are 2006.

They're not ferrules. They're cable end crimps, aka cable tips.

Then what's a ferrule? I thought a ferrule as a cable end tip as well? Is the ferrule the end cap of the outer sheath?

As I understand it, yes.

disclaimer: i don't have them, nor have any plan to get them. i can't imagine they do anything other than add carebon looking crap to your ride.

back to the topic at hand.

hey, i've seen people use a crimped off spoke nipple. seems like it would be too much weight there, but i dunno, they'd be more durable, right?

bonus: my cousin won't think of copying that! downside: my shop tells me the won't be getting any in until spring! crap!

if you crimp off a nipple, does it become a purple nurple?
