Well I am currently searching for some fenders for my 27" wheeled Cannondale h400. I don't wana spend more that 20 so I am wondering if anybody has made fenders that work? Or if someone knows where I can get some for cheap.

Here is a link to some homemade. http://www.mile43.com/peterson/FendForYourself.html
Someone in the 'For Sale' forums was advertising some really nice wooden fenders that he custome makes. That's a possiblity.
Check this guy's stuff (http://search.ebay.com/_W0QQsassZcody6702QQhtZ-1) out. I just got a pair of fenders, and they're beautiful. Just beautiful...and reasonably priced too. More than the $20 you want to spend, you get what you pay for. :)
Could it conceivably cost more or be more hassle to make your own fenders, rather than to just buy a set of Planet Bike Freddie Fenders?

At $19 CDN At MEC (http://www.mec.ca/Products/product_detail.jsp?PRODUCT%3C%3Eprd_id=845524442096215&FOLDER%3C%3Efolder_id=2534374302693141&bmUID=1165430890559) I can't see why you would want to make your own, unless for the sake of just doing it.
Coroplast fenders are cheap/free to make and don't require much time or skill to pull off. They don't look as nice as production fenders and take longer to install/remove. Given how cheap production fenders are if they fit your bike go for the Planetbike Freddy fenders. If your bike is fender challenged like my Pugsley then coroplast is a great alternative.

700c plastic fenders will fit a 27" wheel bike. Less than $30.
i made a rear fender out of hotwheels tracks/zipties/coat hangers.
i'll post some pics tonite it cost me $2 for tracks at a local toystore and another $2 for the zipties.
(i just took a hanger from my closet)

Looking forward to the pictures :)
Who sells those cool looking yellow fenders? I lost the web site.

i hope you'll post some pictures of your bike/face when the hanger and/or ziptie and/or track will get stuck in your rotating front wheel... that could be used as a reference for all future "i wanna build my own fenders" threads...
:)
(ok i know you said rear fender...)
I used a 1/2 gallon plastic milk bottle cut down to size with some zip ties to keep off some of the puke, right behind the front wheel i think it's gonna work!!!!(i could have been a red neck!)
Here (http://www.sonic.net/~maryking/wooden_fenders.html) is a how-to on making your own wooden fenders. Straightforward instructions; it cost the author the price of the mounting gear, so that's under $20 (saying you have a table saw).

And your time costs nothing :)
And your time costs nothing :)
+1
The end result is that the plastic fenders are just a little better too.
It's good to build fenders if you like building things, not to get better value for the $$.
Make love... not fenders. :)

At $19 bucks CDN, it seems hardly worthwhile unless a person likes making things, even then as you say, it would take a lot of time and effort to make anything better than the Planet Bike fenders at any price.
Make love... not fenders. :)

Thanks for the pictures  So do they work well?
here are the photos i promised:
Great idea. Nice looking fenders, I think. Lightweight, cheap, effective.
Kids!~ Guard your hot wheels tracks !!! :)
they work great. i dont get the "just ran in my pants" look when stepping off my bike.

impressive job. you are far above all expectations!
you have sure raised the bar for recycled-metal-home-made fenders!
nice bike...
No coathanger wires anywhere near spokes.
Ever.
i dont see how my use of coat hangers is a hazard. there will never be any weight placed on the wire that could force them to bend or change shape. if you look at an ordinary fender setup you will have metal near your spokes either way.
(since my dropouts lack any anchoring points i used zipties which aren't prone to break when static). and my metal struts aren't two pieces..it is ONE piece folded over my wheel tied to my track. so failure of a single side is unlikely, unlike ordinary fenders where you have 4 struts each one secured independently increasing the chances of one or two or three coming loose on thier own
of course if my setup is dangerous only because they are coat hangers instead of any other type of material then thats a shame. metal is metal.

i dont know what you have against this topic jaysea. The OP asked if anyone had made thier own fenders. I've seen coroplast/2lt. bottles/cardboard. figured id show the OP a different method. if you love store bought fenders that much then knock yourself out and spend the money and save yourself the time.
I spent under $5 for my setup and had fun tinkering at it which makes it worthwhile in my books. i've ridden this setup for about 4 months now and have never had a problem, so i dont understand why you have an issue with something on my bike.
Strangely enough, I was expecting Orange fenders... I remember Hotwheels tracks being orange. I suppose I'm aging myself
:D
they do have orange...and neon green...and bright blue
i chose black because it matched my bike but there is one disadvantage to my color choice.
Black tracks are mainly for straight races. the green and orange ones have these rubber "lanes" imbeded in them for loops and banking curves. this makes them easier to curve to the shape of your wheel. i had to trim a bit of the edges of the black ones to get them to curve smoothly.
^^^ The issue with wire next to spokes is that pretty much everything that I have said to myself "that will never be load bearing" has eventually, somehow, beared a load. And not always beared it well.
Maybe I just run into things too much. :D

my last post was absolutely serious (is there a "not sarcastic" smilie? ahh. might be the  thing i sometime use to show surprise (good or bad, good here))). since i'm surprised by how good a job you've made... i was expecting some crappy/dangerous setup (as my first post illustrates more than fine) and your pictures showed a light/minimalist/good looking setup that also looks like it's working more than fine! and the fact that it's recycled only makes it better. you showed me that there is another factor to be considered into the making of fenders (other than time and money), its talent! sorry for the confusion...

Compared to who?
I would have had to use Lionel Train tracks. :D

lucky that your sarcasm radar did not explode on my first post... silently waiting for pictures will be one of my "new year resolutions"...
