Well, my wife let our dogs out for their morning run at 6:00 am and they promptly found a raccoon and cornered it under my back porch. The snarling, barking, and biting was going on while I took my shower(had to rinse my hair). Well I came out and tried to get the dogs into their kennel where they stay while I am at work. They would have none of that and their was no way to seperate them from the raccoon.
Well, I remembered all the threads here about pepper spray and it came to me that someone had given me some pepper spray about 8 years ago, so I tried it.
On squirt to check it and one squirt under the porch and it was done. The one squirt under the porch got my Lab/mix and she came boiling out and ran into the mist from my trial squirt. It sure worked on her and I was able to corral her and put her away.
My Jack Russel just got really angary, she thought the raccoon must have tried chemical warfare and just tore the raccoon up so bad that I had to shoot the raccoon. I was hoping I could have sent to raccoon off to the woods and called it a day, but "Bell" was having none of that.
I did want to note that the "old" pepper spray just had two applications and it was out of gas, there was plenty of stuff left, just no gas.
So if you have some old cans of spray laying around, make sure of them.

Yeah. We pepper spray our dog all the time. It's great fun for the entire family! :D
Having taken a BIG snort of pepper spray right in the face (while drunk off my A$$) at a party I can definitely tell you it is NO PARTY! By the way... from the same party... tasers work pretty darn good too.
Remind me never to go to a party with lancerob. :(

Interesting...
I have some neighbors which are just asking for a spraying.
And there are some pro-war supporters who need a good spraying, too. Not that I mind pro-war supporters...just the ones who force me into traffic by placing flagpoles in my path as I ride along.

In my case, I wish I had hit the Jack Russel first and not the lab/mix. Belle only got a whiff and Molly (the sweet dog) got the most of it.
When they were all intertwined under the porch it was hard to tell one from the other while it was dark.
And for the raccoon, I really tried to prevent the dogs from hurting him/her, it just didn't work. That Jack Russel is just a terrier, oops, terror.

That sucks. That really sucks. :(
I'd have shot the raccoon to start with and spared the dogs, but thanks for sharing the story.

No, twahl! None of them should have died!! Poor guy was probably real scared. I betcha the pepper spray got him too and could be why he couldn't run or defend himself. It's just too bad any of it happened.

Possible
But, I am sure the pepper spray only hit the lab as the raccoon was further under the porch, just out of the dogs reach. It is to bad this happened this way. I am a hunter and don't mind shooting an animal if I intend to eat it or if it is a danger to loved ones and that sort of thing, but this is not the way I want things to come about.
And twahl, there was really no way to get to the raccoon, no clear shot, and I am not one of those hunters that shoot at sound. Well they aren't hunters either!
My Jack Russel does have a wound under her chin so she didn't get off scott free, I'll have to observe her for a while.

Old pepper spray jams a lot. If you want to count on pepper spray replace it frequently. Here in michigan they banned the good stuff some years ago, so one guy I knows carries 4 different pre-ban canisters of halt from the 80's. He carries them all in a bag on his bars. He used to have 6, but 2 so far have jammed on him when he got attacked by dogs.

I think I will just take the rest of the can and throw it in the burn pile and see what happens. ;) Or better yet, my neighbors burn pile. It's that time of year.

99% chance that the racoon was healthy. The 1% can cause your family a lot of grief, however, if the racoon had rabies. If you still have the head, send it in to be checked. You should be able to call animal control, your sheriff, or your local health department to ask them where to send it.
If it is too late for that, then quaranteen your dogs for two weeks. Don't pet them or let your family get close to them during that time. Keep an eye on the dogs. The general rule of thumb is a two week wait to see symptoms. As far as I know, the only clinical way to test for rabies is post-mortum, so if you don't have the coon's head in good/fresh condition, you might want to take the precaution described above.
Excuse my ignorance, why would you pepper spray your own dogs?

Better than putting salt on them.
Better than slapping them with a fish and saying g'day to you sir.

I was hoping to seperate the combatants without really hurting any of them. I didn't want the dogs to hurt the coon and I didn't want to shoot my dogs and pepper spray would have done the trick if I had had enough or a can that would spray. By the way it worked on the one dog that got a good hit and not a whiff, it works quite well.
I think if I had hit the Jack Russel at first it would have ended better.
After it was all over she was so proud of herself. I only hope she does as well when the mountain lion or black bear comes back.

Wouldn't the garden hose have worked, just as effectively?

Hi:
The garden hose in my experiance doesn'twork, I have tried it before for other reasons and failed. Both dogs like water and it doesn't faze them. If I had thought it would work I sure would have tried.
Hey Bikepacker, you still look like a long lost friend from the navy. See Ya.

Oh wow, guess mine are well behaved. Their run in with a coon ended when I called them and they came. Of course the bata male had the coon in his mouth, like a cat with a mouse. But he dropped it on cammand (and jumped right back on it as soon as it moved). But on the second try he droped, came and stayed. Examined the dogs afterwards and not a mark on either of them. Their skunk adventure was not as much fun, the stink did not bother them but did bother us. Luckily it was early in teh day and we did not have a night of smelly dogs.
