Foo - How many hours a day do you actually spend working?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I'm sure someone will quote "Office Space" here, but really, out of your work day how much time is spent actually working. During the summer I'l work up to 12 or more hours some days, this time of year, most days I'm putting in 5 or 6.

Define 'work'.

Usually about 75% of whatever the length of my shift is.

In today's case....I might be pulling a 24+ hour shift. And you thought only doctors do insane shifts.....when a big enough order is pulled down, it's the single guy that gets to pull the wagon.

As a bonus....massive OT for me.

26 or 27 hours a day

Yeah. That's what i gotta have. If I have my dress clothes on, I consider myself working. Although I may or may not be. :D

Okay, if you only include the time I sit down in my office to the time I leave, I do maybe... 6 hours a day of actually work? But then I BS when I'm running a long process, cause there's nothing I can do otherwise. As long as they keep paying me to be here, i'll be here, thats all I know.

So then...

If I stay in my jammies and clean the house, do laundry and wash the dishes, that's not work?

If I put on my jeans and a sweatshirt, go to the grocery, wash the car trhen come home and clean up dog poo, thats not work?

When I put on slacks and a nice blouse to go fix computers for 6 - 8 hours, thats not work?

But if I put on my "little black dress" and "f**k me pumps" to go out for dinner, then I'm working?

Wot's up wit dat?

I spend about 33 hours a week at my main place of employment. I'm typing this at my main place of employment. And I have learned an incredible amount of stuff about bicycles this past year, thanks to BF. So I leave it to the reader to figure out how much effort it takes to finish my "work".

If there's a renovation project or equipment rebuild/replacement going on - 8 to 10 hours a day. In the spring and summer 4 to 6 hours a day. In the cold months 2 to 3 hours a day.

7 1/2 - 9 hrs a day, numbers add up quite quickly.

Sounds a bit inconsistant, could not handle that very well.

nature of the business, feast or famine, and it takes some getting used to

I live downtown though so when there's nothing to do, I go home, im not stuck like many of the messengers are.

It has its rythm though sometimes, like I already knew that december would be slow, it always is. Just like I knew the fall would be very good, and it was, it always is. Business has grown almost 30% in 2006 though, and it doesnt seem to be slowing down as far as getting new clients either.

The one thing about my job that few jobs have is, there's very little BS in my job. You either did the run or you didnt, there's no faking it or half azzing something, no mulligans either. You perform or you starve or find something else to do. Its pretty good motivation and it keeps the slackers from getting very far in the business. You'll see massive fraud, abuses, and neglect, and nepotism, and all sorts of BS in many offices of courier companies though, that is one thing im glad to be rid of.

I can easily pull a 12-16 hour shift in the studio, but that's only a couple of times a month.

As a writer, it's on average 1-4 hours a day. I took a day off yesterday, and had a mid-day nap. I woke up, and freaked out, thinking "I need to get to work!!!".

Then I remembered that I'm a writer. I'm always "at work". Typing is just a fraction of what I do.

i would consider the commute work as well, so that right there is around 2 1/2 hours. then actually at the job, i would estimate between 5-7, depending on how im feeling. plus you gotta factor in who your working with, how much screwing around and joking is happening, cigarettes, but you can smoke and work at the same time until the thing burns down too much and smoke goes into your eyes. but these factors are all based on my current project. ok that is all ok bye

Folks...We are working twenty four frickin hours a day...my body is working at night when I sleep to detoxify, rebuild, recuperate and rejuvenate. During the day is is overly stimulated, stressed, taxed and beaten. Lets not forget the work of digesting, fighting bacteria, infections, dieseases...etc.

Now if you mean the time we spend trying to hustle trade able currency to barter for a more comfortable life...it is always too much time.

Actually, I don't have a job.......other than student! At that, I devote between 60 and 70 hrs a week. Other than that, it's train, BF, Eat and Sleep! (A few other activities as well......)

On average 50 hours a week, where 80 to 90% of that is actual work.
