Hiya,

I just signed up for this charity ride Sunday Feb 11th. While it's a relatively short ride of 25 miles in areas I cover all of the time, I felt it important to be able to donate a few dollars to the cause. Plus it comes with a jersey and a bunch of folks to ride with!

Any other Socalers want to join me?

I think I'm riding Palm Springs that weekend. If I'm back, 25 miles would be a nice recovery ride distance, and I do believe in the cause. You have a link w/ more details?

I'd consider it Sheldon since it is for a good cause, near to me and a week out from Butterfield - which would work as I'll be "tapering" the training at that point. :)

25 miles would be more like a "walk in the park", 50 miles would be a taper after all the mileage your doing. Of course you could always to the route twice. :D :D

The first date is this year's ride. The one we want is 2007. I worked as a volunteer during the first event and missed the ride so I'm looking forward to the next edition.

Whoops sorry didn't catch the 2006 - bad date for the ride same as Tour de Palm Springs but I may consider doing this ride if we an get together a team.

The route is a large loop from TO around to Hidden Valley and back. It would be possible to extend the distance in several ways. Instead of going directly into HV, you could follow the Cruising route up Rock Store, do the hills and then drop down into HV. Other routes could be done as well.

Possibly, we have certain duties at our church and the schedule for February is not out yet. If I am available that day, I don't see why not.

If you all want, we can do some miles after the organized ride. Maybe tour some of the Santa Monica's mountains out here.

It looks like this is the day after the Tour de Palm Springs so I'm most likely in. Also trying to get my cousins that live up that way to sign up.

Hopefully the weather will cooperate! I expect that we'll be between rain storms on Sunday so we could get lucky. So, hope to find some of you there. I'm going to try to coordinate with Adam on meeting at the Start area.

There is a jersey included with the ride and I guess I'll wear that instead of our Socal one. If there are numbers, I'll try to remember to put a red star on there!

Yeah, well I'm with you. If it's rainy, I'm picking up my jersey and heading home. I don't see any reason to be out there all soakin' wet just to say I did it, especially since I ride these areas all the time. The money goes to a good cause and is already paid.

Later in the week, let's see if we can arrange a meeting place and time for those who are coming.

I am really doing my anti rain dance here but every time I check the weather sites I get worse news. Clearly the gods dont like my dacing skills -- i dont blame the however!

There is a Marmalade Cafe not to far from where the ride would have started. I dont eat out for breakfast that often in that area but I know the Marmalade in Sherman Oaks is always on my list when I venture out before 11 am on a weekend.

Adam any other ideas since its you "neck of the woods?"

Hey Adam,

Weather is still holding. NWS now says the storm has backed off and is moving slower. They expect rain to reach us very late afternoon or evening. I just checked the radar and it shows heavy action around Paso Robles but nothing much south of there. Maybe this will wash out and we'll get the ride in tomorrow!

As of now; if it's raining, I'll go pick up my jersey but I'm skipping the ride. If it's ok, then I'll plan on heading over there a bit after 8.

Your thoughts?

Unfortunately not. Well... If all fails, maybe the streets will dry out by afternoon and a ride will be in order !

It's raining (very lightly) in Sherman Oaks. I'm bailing and sleeping in. You boys still want to meet for breakfast, please call me no earlier than 7:30 and I'll get dressed and come meet you. Yes, ride sometime tomorrow for sure! :)

It is raining here in the Canejo... I'll get up early and check again to see if miraculously it gets dry, however, I would doubt it.

I'm up for a recovery ride tomorrow though if it does dry out. My legs needs one from todays Santa Monicas Climbing.

Rain at 6:40 am is pretty steady but radar shows not much action. NWS calls for the storm to leave the area by late morning/early afternoon.

If it clears later this morning, I'll post to see if anyone wants to take an afternoon cruise.

well, I just go up... I never sleep in this late. I'm going to have breakfast and then I may go for a spin just from SO to GP and back (so if it rains, I won't be far from home). It's wet for sure but the sun is peeking out. Hard to tell.

Well, the ride went off!

When I took the dog out for a walk at 7am, it was rainy and cold. By 7:45, I saw a peak of sun and thought, "well, let's take a drive to the start and pick up my jersey and see what's going on."

It was still cloudy and coolish, but ran into a few friends from the Sat shop ride and figured I'd go for it. Everyone was!

We lined up in waves, about 14 or them, I think. I was in group 4. I'm guessing there were 500 riders? Could have been a few more, though.

We took off, slowly at first. Under the dark skies, we zigzagged around Thousand Oaks. I discovered that drafting behind someone with wet streets gives you a nice shower! For the most, part, however, conditions dried out as we rode. I was in no hurry. I matched my pace to ride with others just for the conversation, which makes the entire event fun anyhow!

At the 12 mile mark, a rest stop awaited with fruit and PBJ.

After a brief cool down there (and it was cool!), several of us rode off on the next leg together. We had a nice cruise through Hidden Valley, with a bit more sun beginning to shine. At the top of the downhill leaving the valley, volunteers were reminding folks to watch speed. Somewhere in there, our group split apart and I completed the 25 mile ride on my own, going through a balloon arc finish line. Small crowds of people waited and applauded all riders, many of whom were riding in honor of family and friends.

There was a wall where people could write thoughts about cancer patients, dedications, etc. Reading these tributes was a stark and sober reminder of the reason we were there and I found many of them moving.

There was a band, booths and some platters of fruit for the riders.

Never did see anyone from BF. As we were all wearing provided jerseys (very nice ones too!), and since I haven't met that many others from our board, I doubt I would have recognized anyone anyway!

At I write this (1:30pm Sunday), it's beautiful outside!

Thanks for the report, Sheldon. I now feel bad that I didn't come out there. It would have been a great recovery ride and for such a worthy cause. :( It's wonderful to hear so many did show. My bad, but it was so wet in Sherman Oaks and raining outside my window around 5:30am, that I just fell back asleep. Well, glad you were there representing! :)

Well, sorry I didn't get the chance to meet you at the event, ME! On the other hand, I doubt I could have done Palm Springs yesterday and then this one today so I don't blame you for sleeping in!

In the end, I'm glad I did the ride and supported the cause. Watch for us on KTLA Channel 5 news as they had a camera crew out there.
