Northeast - Montauk Ride vs. Montauk Century

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

It just was mentioned in the Road Forum that the former director of the Montauk Century has resigned and is running a century ride the same day, also to Montauk, also with the same distance options. Any New York area folks have any ideas about which might be the safer bet?

i would wait and hope they resolve their problems as both websites give the same exact info, routes and plans. seems like its going to be really confusing if it stays this way.

I am a member of the (5BBC) Five boro bike club and they are no longer using Glen to organize the montauk century which has been a 5bbc ride for many years, now as for other details im not sure whats going to happend. i myself am going to wait until later to register for this ride. my best advice is to wait and see what happends with this dispute.

Not to cut in on the thread but I've only lived in this region for four years and would possibly like to ride the Montauk ride next year. Is it fixed gear flat because that's the only bike I'd feel comfortable having transported back to Manhattan en masse in the truck? TIA
It's pretty flat. I've only done the metric which has about four 'high points' - Ponquogue Bridge in Southampton and three "Hither Hills" just before the end in Montauk. If you look at the area in Google Earth I don't think Old Montauk Highway ever goes any higher than 60 o 70 feet above sea level. Maybe less.
Even so, as Tankman already mentioned, it's probably better to wait till the dust has settled before plunking down any money on this ride.
