General Cycling Discussion - Just a wave or nod will do-Gimme something

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I have been riding the same roads of my area for years now and have encountered thousands of cyclists along the way. Most are friendly and cordial and will exchange a greeting as they pass by. On occassion, I will encounter a person off in the distance. As he gets closer, I will always make some kind of a gesture; "hello", a wave, "nice day for a ride", whatever. What kind of irritates me are the people that ignore you as if you're not there. I have done my share of racing, and have had many intense rides, but I always find time to greet a fellow cyclist. I may be the one to give you a tube one day if you get a flat. At least say hello. Is anyone else annoyed by fellow cyclists who seem too busy or self-important to say a simple hello as they pass are being passed or as they are passing in the opposite direction? maybe I am just being sensitive. What do you think? Gino

I don't think so- but that's just your feeling, and I totally understand.

There are people I see all the time when I'm riding, and some of them give me no thought whatsoever. Others say hi, or good morning or whatever. I try to nod or make eye contact with everyone I see, and if they're looking receptive, I'll give a gesture of hello or whatever.

I also stop anytime I think someone needs help. About a month ago, I saw a woman go down hard, and she was bleeding out of her nose pretty bad. A couple of weeks ago, I guy took a bad tumble over that big assed crack over by the museum campus and went over the handlebars, and I pulled over for him. Then about a week ago, I met a nice group of people that were stopped because this guy was making repairs to his recumbent bike and I wanted to see if they needed help. I try to stop for everyone that looks like they need the help, and I would hope they would stop for me! What comes around, goes around, I always say.

I don't personally get annoyed if people don't say hi, but if you think you'd like to get a nod or something, maybe you can be a little more "aggressive" (for lack of a better word) when saying hello. If they're still ignoring you, they're not worth the time. Then again, they better never have problems and need help either, because if they are not friendly to most people, and those people pass them by when they need the help, they have no one but themselves to blame!

What other cyclists?

The other cyclists I meet are on Hogs or there 10 years old on BMX bikes. ;)

They throw things at old farts on road bikes, but I love them anyway!:p

There have been endless threads and polls on the subject of waving, nodding, smiling etc at cyclists, pedestrians, motorists etc.

Here is just one of them. (http://www.bikeforums.net/showthread.php?threadid=17408)

It's probably best to continue the discussion on the existing thread.
