View Full Version : Bike to an interview?

I have an interview in a few weeks for a company that is very environmentally conscious - heavily supports biking vs driving. It's only a few miles away (10 min ride) so I'm not worried about sweating. Curious if I should ride to show that I actually do ride and encorporate it into my lifestyle (which I do) or just walk/cab it to avoid the slight possibility of a wipe out/erratic cab/grease/stain/whatever.

I didn't want to post this in the car free or commuting - was curious what your opinions were. Of course commuters and car-free-ers are free to comment :)

Thanks!

As a commuter I say hell yes. I got my job by riding in. Guess it helps that it's a bike shop :p

Yeah, go for it! For me, personally, if a company doesn't support that kind of lifestyle, I wouldn't want to work for them.

Are they going to be watching when you show up? Will they even know?

I think so - from what I've read they have a bike room on the floor.

That's what the jacket's for ;)

Was thinking of changing my shoes before going into the building though (my bike has little teeth on them, great for rubber bad for leather).

Hmm, pinstripe or double breasted?

Show up in full OCP uniform for a sure win! If the company supports that healthy lifestyle, I think it would be good. Just a guess, I've never done it. Make sure you can lock up your bike though.

wear as much hemp clothing as possible. non-leather shoes. carry a bag from your local natural food co-op.

but seriously, sounds like it might be a good idea to ride to it. it's not that far.

Here in Kansas you would be better off showing up drunk than riding your bike to the interview, and I'm not kidding! :(

I say Hells yeah!

If they really are as supportive as you say, I feel it would look favorably on you.

Can you lay down a vicious skidmark in the main lobby?

How about drunk AND riding your bike? I'll need to try that a few places out here when my current contract is up where I'm at.

Well, we do have the capital right across the Brooklyn Bridge :)

Wear the single breasted suit and ride your bike to the interview. Use a geek strap and make sure you have enough time to cool down and stop sweating before you go inside the building. Good luck!

I would only accept advice on this topic from people with paying jobs or who actually interview other people for jobs. Like it or not appearances seem to make a difference in job interviews, that doesn't mean you couldn't show up dressed like a courier but I would be sure to research it a little before I did. It sounds like you would always be welcome to bike commute AFTER you got the job.

Absolutely - I wasn't talking about dressing in track pants on a fixie :D The only thing that would be different would be a bike with my briefcase - I like and look good dressing to the nines!

I agree with Ernesto. Play it super straight for the interview. After you get the job, start flexing your muscle.

I vote to play it safe for the interview. Dress nicely and don't take chances with a mishap. You'll have plenty of chances to ride in when/if you get the job.

normally this is my position also when it comes to interviews... but since the OP said this company heavily supports bicycling in instead of driving (wonder how the OP knows this?), I'd say go ahead and ride to the interview.

If it's the company I think it is, I think they encourage bike commuting. Fold up the suit jacket so it doesn't wrinkle and ride to the interview, take 10 mins. to cool down. Bring some wet wipes and a hankerchief to clean up the sweat and wash your face, then put on your jacket and nail the interview.

Yeah, I figure I'd get to the neighborhood about an hour before, cool down, fold up, change shoes, walk in about 25 mins before.

I'll decide the morning of - if it's nice I'll go for it!
