Bicycle Mechanics - Kind of annoying... Freehub noise
Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
The new wheel I recently bought makes 4 clicks louder than all the rest when coasting, and kind of transfers a really faint rumble to the bike. It's not getting worse, but as a perfectionist and a tinkerer, I'd like to know if it's something out of the ordinary. It's a cheap shimano hub if that helps, but it's made the noise since brand new.

Remove the lockring from the end. Then drip 80-95W tranny oil into the freehub. Quiets the pawls really well.

Does it smell as bad as 90W gear oil?
probably worse, from what I know of both (I'm a much better auto mechanic than bike mech, but I'm working on that)
Gear oil may or may not help, or may only be a temporary fix. Some hubs have finer pitched ratcheting mechanisms than others, and the coarser ones tend to be louder.
I put a pair of MAVIC ES wheels on my wife's bike and I can't believe how loud they are (even lubed); fortunately she likes the sound.
