I'm thinking of replacing a sora RD on my folding bike (the plastic bits on it just disturb me...), and am wondering if ultegra would require a different shifter? I'm hoping since they are both Shimano road parts, that they would have the same pull ratios.

It should work fine, but why go all the way to Ultegra? Tiagra would be much cheaper and give similar (or identical) performance. The limiting factor for the shifting will be the shifters not the RD.

I just checked out shimano's site....good to find out they have a short cage tiagra RD...I'll probably go that way.

Thanks!

I bet you can find an old stock 8 speed RD off ebay.
