My friend asked me to find her an old bike to use as a planter in her yard. Well, I found a throw-away at the LBS - a 1936 model (no badge) which was nicely rusted in most areas. In order to enhance the effect, I stripped all the remaining paint with a sander. I then sprayed 3% peroxide solution and sprinkled on some table salt. Instant rust! Gobs of it! Lookin' good!

No, no, no! It is happy to be used for a decorative purpose rather than being crushed and melted. Really. I asked its permission.

Its riding days are over :( but its new owner is going to take good care of it and it can enjoy all those beautiful flowers all summer. Outdoor bikes hibernate you know so the winter will be easy too.

You should do something to prevent the rust from destroying the bike, maybe clearcoat over the rust or apply some kind of oil or something.

i think its cool to use it as decoration when its riding days are over. its like a monument to all of the fun it gave to its riders/owners. ive seen websites of art made entirely of used bicycle parts and there is a shop here in kansas city called acme where they decorate with old bike parts. kudos dude! fast eddie outty

It will look quite interesting when the tree grows around the frame.

is that one of those chains with plastic on it? it looks very out of place. you should take it off and make the chain rusty too so it looks like it's been locked there the whole time. of course, a rusty chain may not be strong so you'll have to find a more less visible way of securing it in addition to the chain
