I just wanted to verify before buying a new wheelset... is there any issue in using Avid mechanicals with XT/XTR disk hubs? I wouldn't think so, but I just want to make sure.

Am riding Avids mechs with XT hubs and Mavic X317 rims. Excellent combination and I am very happy with same. Enjoy!!

That was the setup I was looking at. Cool thanks.

Suggestion for a good place to buy them? :) Would it be better to buy the parts and have a LBS build them (order through shop?)?

Mine came from Colorado Cyclist. They are a HUGE wheel builder and their pricing is great. I have purchased two sets of road wheels and two of MTB from them over the past five years and have been very pleased. Think XT/Mavic combo from them is around $209 + shipping. And they stand behind their work, no questions ask. Enjoy!!

Oh, one more question. Do I need to be concerned about the spokes, or just let them use whatever they use? I guess you've been happy with what CC has done.

Thanks.

I've always told them to build with the DT double-butted spokes rather than their standard DT straight spoke. Is a bit lighter and stronger. Think it costs about 30 cents per spoke additional. You can also request colored nipples, which are pretty trick. Red, gold, etc. Think these are another 30 cents, or so, per spoke. You can also get black spokes, rims and hubs. Their catalog is pretty complete on their wheel building options. Their website might also be, but I haven't visited recently to see. You can call their 800 number to discuss with someone on the technical side. May not be open on Good Friday for technical answers. Lots of options. They will also give you a special deal on tires/tubes when you purchase wheels from them. Enjoy!!

You cannot run XTR hubs with Avid mechs. When using XTR disc hubs you have to use XTR disc brakes.

I thought I had heard something like that, but i'll stick with XT anyway. Thanks.
