Classic & Vintage - How might I put a rear brake on this Peugeot

I had mentioned in one of the rehab-my-Peugeot threads having a Peugeot frame with rear brake bridge that I've never seen before. The brake hole is vertical, not horizontal. No sign of cantilever studs, and I'm assuming those are rack braze-ons above the bridge. Might this bike had a hub brake of some sort? Any idea of what's the best way to put a rear brake on this thing?

Thanks,

Neal

There was a brake bolt to convert to the vertical mounting in the old days, don't know where you'd find one today, but the bike doesn't look THAT old...

Like I said before, it takes a special adapter. I've seen one, but I don't know where you'd be able to find one. I already had a search for vintage brake parts set up on eBay and I just ran it with no luck. I'd try to fabricate something, but I'm equpped for that sort of thing. I definitely wouldn't redrill that brake bridge. Good luck!

Try eBay or the Schwinn forum for a Weinmann converter. Works only with Weinmann sidepulls, as it is basically the spring mounting and the shaft that the caliper arms fit to.

I found a picture on Wool Jersey of what the brake attachment is supposed to look like: http://www.wooljersey.com/gallery/v/richard/DSCF0030.JPG.html

Hmm. Wonder if that means my frame is fairly old?

Bikeville.com has them listed in their Brakes section on their webpage. You might give them a shout.

Good luck getting Bikeville to "shout" back. Poor service, if any - not the type of folks I'd feel comfortable sending my money to.

Now that I know what it's supposed to look like, I think I'll try fabricating something out of a steel reflector bracket. Pics to come.

Well, here are the results of my modification. Didn't drill the bridge, Dirtdrop. Instead, I chopped up a rear reflector bracket and drilled a hole for the brake bolt. Not particularly elegant, but for what'll be a cheapo 5-speed city bike, I think it should work just fine.

Any pics of the whole bike?

Here are a few shots of the bike as it currently stands. My guess is that it's a repainted, re-stickered UE-8. The white area on the seat tube looks to be what's left of the original paint. The wheelset is from a Raleigh Sprite, and I was able to get a sealed BB in there that I pulled from a junked MTB.
