Northern California - Thinking about moving, need to find out about my commute.

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

So here's the scoop. I currently live in Redwood City and work on the Stanford Campus in Palo Alto. I love my 12 mile round trip commute. My wife works in San Jose, she takes the car. But we want to move somewhere cheaper and closer to her job since she doesn't get out of work until 11:30pm. So I may have to commute from San Jose to Stanford. Anyone do this? I am open to the idea of mixing my commute with public transit, but I want to know if this is even possible, especially since I often have to be at work at 6am. Am I crazy to try it? Is it safe to ride through all those neighborhoods?
I'm sure you can take the CalTrain then finish your commute on your bike. Check the VTA website for buses and light rails.

Where in San José? From the west side (Valley Fair, Winchester, Campbell, Cupertino, etc.), it is not too much of a stretch to get onto Foothill Blvd/Expressway, takes you right up to Stanford. About 30-50 minutes, depending, of course.
But, SJ covers a lot of area...
