Mountain Biking - Am I missing something here?

Seems almost too good to be true, $300 for good hubs/rims/spokes and hydrolic brakes? I want to get these but I'm afraid there may be some catch I'm not aware of.

you ARE missing something.... its shimano.... IMHO shimano is not to be dealt with, I dont like them. The brakes are proprietary, only using shimano mineral oil, centerlock hubs and rotors = you have to go to them every time..... for the average rider (IE you) they are ok, IF I where still into XC and didnt have loyalties and sponsorships I would nab it.... decent gear at a decent price..... My money goes to sram, hayes, FSA and Raceface.... thems is gold folk and they dont have their heads up their @$$es

I think its a great deal DevilsGT2, some people hated Shimano because they actually made everything their standard, center lock and everything. I always wondered why Shimano hubs are laced into SUN rims?

I agree with FreeRidin, Shimano makes good crankset and their new hydro brakes are under rated

mmmm close..... I just listed my preffered companies on the off chance that someone was interested in my opinion.... and i wouldnt say that shimano corrupts you... mainly points in one direction, nabs your cash, kicks you in the nuts, and leaves you with a poo product... :D

that would be so sick.... my bike (if i had one) would smell good (if i had a nose) while bombing down a trail (if i could ride a bike).

from what i've read, the perfume in baby oil will eat up your seals and stuffs.

Last time I checked, mineral oil is mineral oil, and baby oil is mineral oil with perfume.

Magura Blood mineral oil is the recommended oil, which is a 10 weight mineral oil. By far, our most common problem we encounter is consumers putting off-the-shelf mineral oil (from a drug store) in their Magura hydraulic brakes. Off-the-shelf mineral oil is normally 30-50 weight which will make the brake very sluggish. In addition, off-the-shelf mineral oil has additives, perfumes and different boiling points, all of which can cause brake failure. USE ONLY MAGURA BLOOD IN YOUR BRAKE SYSTEM. Use of any other fluid besides Magura Blood mineral oil will void your warranty.
Now of coarse this is Magura not Shimano.

Baby oil is a temp. fix.... and STAY AWAY from synthetic oils they will eat your seals... water can be used as well, but has a much lower boiling pint than hydro or mineral oil. The BIGGEST difference between mineral oil and baby oil is the BP baby oils have lower BP's than mineral oil..... I stick with DOT 3 hydro..... cheap and easy to comeby.

First off, I think we should be clear that you should use whatever is recommended with your brakes. No mixing DOT fluid in mineral oil brakes or vice versa.

As far as the DOT 3, 4, or 5.1 (5 is silicone based which is not to mixed with any of the others and really not recommended in any that I know of, so keep it out of your cars too!), there is a viscosity and boiling point difference between them (increasingly higher boiling points). I seriously doubt you would get to the boiling point of any of the fluids on a mountain bike, as even wet (3.5% water) the boiling points are usually over 350 deg. (maybe some down hillers will have a problem?).

The problem with DOT fluid is it is hygroscopic, meaning that it absorbs moisture from the air. This will lower the boiling point of the fluid. Boiling the fluid is bad because it creates a compressable gas and creates spongy brakes or brakes that don't grip as well. This is why the DOT fluid should be changed out frequently, probably at least once a year or more if your bike sees a lot of moisture.

Anyway, off track a little bit here, but the DOT 5.1 will have the highest boiling point of all of them. Whether it's needed in a mountain bike application or not, I don't know. I can tell you that I usually only run a high temp. DOT 4 (around 500 deg.) in my track car and frequently change the fluid.

This looks like a good deal. XT hubs are better than the Minimum recommended for offroad use (LX) The Brakes are underrated and the only let down is the Rims- Sun Rhino lite are not that light but they are Good Rims.

On the Brake Fluid- Dot 4 is OK for Bike disc brakes. I use 5.1 but for a reason- I ride a heavy Tandem and I ride in an area that does have an atmosperic Water problem. That hydroscopic effect has hit me with the old dot 3 so I play safe with 5.1.

Sounds like a good deal but check out a few other sites and builders to see if the same offer is around but cheaper.

Definately not boiling, but on many extended runs or multiple runs I have hit some serious expansion to the point where the brakes were useless.

You talking about the Anthem? Wait until you're do for a change and then check with what Avid recommends.

because I read its manual and if im not mistaken it states that Juicy accepts DOT 5 and 4 fluid. And I was wondering, what you guys mean squishy? Pull the lever and you dont feel a solid thud?

Yes, spongy brakes feel you've lost the direct feeling with the brake caliper on the disc. It's like you're pressing through something soft before the brake starts feeling effect. I've never felt spongy brakes on a mountain bike as I have mechanical brakes but I have definitely felt it in a car.

Oo, kay maybe next month when I sent my bike for service I will ask my dealer to check the discs. Im not sure if I need to bleed my front brake or not because It feels different then my rear when you pull the lever
