I've got a 9 speed chain thats brand new. I also have a bunch of 7 speed cassette cogs. My road bike is 10 speed, so I have no use for 7 speed or 9 speed stuff.

I want to go to a larger cog on my singlespeed, but the chain that is on there is too short. so, I wanted to use the 7 speed cog with my 9 speed chain. Is there any reason why this wouldnt work? remember folks, this is a SINGLESPEED. no shifting will be done here.

I had a box of 6,7,8,9 & 10 speed parts. There were SunTour, Shimano, Campy and tons of odd lot stuff. Ebay returned me a handsome sum of money. I am in the process of selling off all my Campy 8 speed parts now. Sometimes, it is just better to sell off all the old parts and buy what you need.

I know that this goes against the "Tinkering Mentality" but you wind up spending more time and money in the long run. Plus, the extra time you spend working on it you could be out riding. Good luck whatever you do.

If everything is new there will be no issue. If you have a worn cog or stretched chain, you could get skipping. Mix-n-Match at will for 1 speed.
