What's best to use for getting rid of the gook left when you peel off those plastic decals?

Goof-Off or simular solvent usually works well. Test it in a small out of the way spot first just to make sure it doesn't damage the finish first.

Goo-Gone is my fave. They have it at home depot, and small containers at office supply stores.

Thanks for that. Should have explained, I'm in the UK, so I'm guessing some of those arn't available (WD40 is). Anyone know any general stuff - lighter fuel, maybe. I seem to remember that worked for something like that.

DO NOT USE GOOF OFF. It will eat through dang near anything.
I use WD40 and Goo Gone, in that order.

I've had success taking the goo off with olive oil, and then taking the olive oil off with Simple Green.

Peanut butter works too, if you are trying to keep it edible. I like WD-40, then clean off the oily residue with a mild degreaser. WD-40 doesn't really disolve the glue, it just makes the glue roll into a ball when you rub it.

OK, I'll say it again...
3M makes some stuff called;
General Purpose Adhesive Cleaner
About $10/Qt at automotive paint supply stores.
It can be used on almost any finish and removes tar from your car as well!
Get some and you'll wonder how you've lived this long without it!;)
