Road Cycling - Cycling movies?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
Anyone out there know of any movies with cycling as the theme? I faintly remember one many years ago that I saw at the drive in with Star Wars, I think it was called the cutters, or the clippers, or something like that. Anyone else remember that?

Check out that thread...LoneStarCyclist listed LOTS of good cycling movies on there.
I think the movie you are referring to was Breaking Away.
I posted in the thread that Ms. Vicki gave you, but I was going to re-emphasize the "Beijing Bicycle" movie. I watched it about a week or so ago, and it was a very good movie- subtitled in English.

Another one that is really great is a short feature made by Jacques Tati about 50 years ago. It's about a goofy French postman delivering the mail on his bike: he drafts off a truck while he sorts it, tangles with a passing pro peloton, and does a whole lot of really hilarious stuff.
It was released recently as a bonus feature on the DVD reissue of Tati's Mon Oncle (My Uncle). I rented it locally (Santa Cruz, CA). Tati's movies are very funny and since they are mostly made up of sight gags, so the dialog is unimportant.

Does that mean there's no english subtitles, then?

Hi Resident-
Can you tell me a little what this movie is about? What's the genre? What did you like about it?

This is a documentary about the 1976 Paris-Roubaix, a road race which takes place in northern France. Much of the action takes place on cobblestone roads, and included are some spectacular crashes. It features some of the all-time greats of cycling; Merckx, De Vlaeminck, Martens, and Moser. Very inspirational!

In Tati's movies, if he wants you to understand dialog there are subtitles, but most of the time the dialog is ambient, kind of background sound to the physical comedy. In the latter case, I don't think most native and fluent French speakers could understand much of it. I know it sounds strange, but it is very funny when you see it. And, hey, for a comic actor/director he's pretty good on the bike.

LA- can you let us know what the movie is about?
When I lived in LA, i was always getting tickets to see the new movies for the screening/editing process. Lucky you!

Like the website says:D :
It is a documentary that follows a pro team through a year of racing in America. It tells the stories of 8 guys that give up everything to be a pro and was the first time I actually understood all that was involved with racing as a pro.
I thought it was about going fast. I was wrong. The movie is inpsirational, scary at times, moving and very cool. There are lots of great racing scenes and interviews with some riding celebs (Franky Andreu is in it a lot).
The soundtrack is very cool and the voiceover was done by Keith David (the voice for BMW, UPS, XBox, etc.).
Ohmygosh! I thought you underlined the movie for grammatical purposes... I'm going to take a look at this website and see when the movie is coming out. Maybe I can drag along one of my friends.

Waitaminute!
Check back for the DVD???!!!! They're not going to release this around the country? Why is it that it's only being shown in Southern California and no other place? Man, this is not cool!
I am bummed. I'm waiting for the DVD now. :(

Breaking away is one of the best movies ever. Not only is it a cool bike flick but it also has a great story and lots of humor. Been a favorite of mine since I was a kid. If you get the dvd it has the original trailer wich is absolutely hilarious.

I found American Flyers on DVD a couple of days ago. Cheap too. It's good to finally own a copy after hiring old videos of it several times over the years.
I still haven't seen Breaking Away and haven't been able to find it in any rental or retail store. I'll have to keep on looking.

Vive le Tour, a documentary by Loius Malle (Pretty Baby, Murmur of the Heart) is great. Its about the Tour in the 60s. Some great footage of domestiques raiding a restaurant and carrying away everything liquid, which in those days was wine, beer, and then sharing with the rest of the team.

There's something like that in The Greatest Show on Earth (The Story of The 1974 Giro); there's some footage of riders opening the bottles using their stems as they ride along "no-hands".

If you haven't seen it, you must see "American Flier" with Keven Costner. I've seen it at least eight times and never tire of it. For weeks afterward, my imagination pits me against my racing nemisis as I race towards the finish at the end of each daily ride.
