Mountain Biking - Trek Fuel 90 opinions

Looking to get a used fuel 90

Opinions? I really like trek and cannondale but cannondales are out of my price range. I would have around 800 to spend maybe a grand if it was a deal that was really worth it. DO you think that 90 is what i should be looking at? I'm going to be on the look out for a bike that was bought with the intention to be ridden but it didnt really happen that much...;)

People with 90's how do you like them? Is the ZR 9000 frame solid, im not planning on buying a bike from some fat guy, and i know about the loss of warranty due to 2nd ownership

Should i try and get one with disc?

look up a Jamis Dakar and you'll get a really decent brand new full suspension bike for just over $800, if thats what you're looking to buy

I rode a local dude's Fuel (I think it was a 70) and it may as well have just been a 31lb hardtail.

The rear suspension wasn't very effective and he has broken his frame already. He's not a big guy, either.

Basically the bike felt kinda clunky.

(I have actually ridden another guy's 70 and it felt like crap too)

The 90 is probably better though. I didn't take the time to look and see how either bikes were spec'd, so they may have been spec'd with entry level heavy components. I'm also not sure which shock either bike had.

They were at least a couple yrs old.

I have a 2003 Fuel 80 with ZR9000 frame and have beat the crap out of it. No cracks. Plain old Fox Float on the rear that does a great job, only a little bob in middle ring when your out of the saddle. The 90 came with better components. You can probably get one on flea bay cheaper than $800.00, you can't go wrong.

Where can you get a dakar for $800?

anyone else with a fuel have opinions?

With the fuel's history of durability, which is to say the least a bit iffy, I wouldn't go with a used fuel. Been seeing top pivot mounts on the fuels break cleanly off lately.

also have they gotten better in recent years?

They originally broke at the bottom pivot that was up to 2004, now with 2004 and later they are separating at the top pivot mount.

Save your $$ and look out of 05-06 closeouts. I hear Jamis and Giants have some good deals on them. I wish Cannondales did the cheap-closeout-deal-thing...I have a used Cannondale,they are nice!:beer:

chelboed you should become a promoter for Jamis Dakar, the way you write it will attract peoples attention, pretty cool when you wrote, but a Dakar at the end of your reply.

The only thing I like bout trek is their lifetime warranty, I wonder why TREK could give such a deal

I have a Jamis Dakar. I love my Dakar. My Dakar makes me happy. When I ride my Dakar, I smile. I paid less than a grand for my Dakar. Granted, I built my Dakar. But I still love my Dakar. The Jamis Dakar is a good bike. It's fun to use the word Dakar in every sentence. Like...I went to the store and (Dakar) bought some milk.

Buy a Dakar.

i realize im reviving a dead thread, but i recently picked up a trek fuel 90 frame and decided to rebuild it with some more modern components. a tad heavy at 30 lbs but really not bad considering it's 10 years old already. take apart the bushings and give them a good cleaning, fox float went 10 years without a service, just replaced gaskets and it rides like new! pretty nice ride when set on the plush side, awesome XC bike but not for more extreme downhill conditions. i personally love the way it sucks up roots but still climbs like a hardtail.
